Is a sweet watch, dunno how much it costs though.

Whether the link and the dial would hold a premium, not sure. Depends how rare it is.

Oh, welcome to the forum.

Not sure what is says on the card, but I live in Bahrain and recently had the chance to purchase a BNIB WG Day Date that was in the Sultan's personal collection - crest engraved by Rolex on the back of the watch....didn't raise the value/cost of the watch at all - could be purchased for BD 5000.000 (Bahraini Dinars) = USD 13,000.00.

We get lots of those here to be fair - Saudi, Emerait, Omani, etc crests....

There are many Rolex watches with various middle east sultans insignias on the dial some of the most valuable ones are the early sports watches. In was around 1970,that Qaboos bin Said Al Said ousted his father and has ruled as sultan of Oman ever since. The British (SAS) and several Arab Nations sent well-trained forces to assist the Sultan, and the rebels were defeated. Legend has it that the Special Forces suffered heavy losses, and only 7 Special Forces Officers survived. As a token of his appreciation, Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al Said presented them each with a Rolex Sea Dweller ref 1665 with the Nations Coat of Arms printed on the dial in Gold. Also several Local Officers were presented with a Rolex Sea Dweller ref 1665 with the Nations Coat of Arms printed on the dial in Red. I am not sure how many of these were issued, but many middle east sultans had there coat of arms added to Rolex watches, in fact there was a special department in Rolex H/Q to oversee these matters.During the 1970s and 1980s it was not only Subs and Sea-Dwellers,they came in Presidents, Datejusts , Dates, TOG, and Airkings. Back in that era it was quite common for the Middle Eastern Kings to display their names and Family and counties Symbols all over watches, cars etc to these people money was no object

I was told that it would cost closer to $100 000, mainly due to the fact that it was issued personally by the sultan and has his business card. Could this be true?

No, these types of watches, although a curiosity, are not a rarity

Sorry, it wasn't a Sultan of Oman, but it was a King of Saudi Arabia (Fahd bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud) as it is said on the card and on the dial, and they were awarded by him personally in Mecca.

The Palm Tree and two swords refer to the Saudi emblem.

The wording on the card is the full name of the late King Fahad bin Abdulaziz Al Saud (bin = son of) ..

The watch says "Fahad" the King's name

There is no premium or special interest in these unique watches although there may be Saudi collectors who seek them out.. Probably the actual market is small so they may need to reduce prices to sell in some areas of the world.

Seems to be plenty of them around

Cool dial and history but sadly not worth a premium.

True, Mon, but our new member, wkhalaf, finally provided a complete answer to the OP's 2011 question (including the word on the dial)
