Explorer I 39mm owners/tryers-on: Thoughts now?
The explorer i 39mm was reviled for its supposedly short hands on issue.
Question now for owners & tryers-on -- how do you like them now? After the fray, it seems like a darn nice watch. |

I have handled the new Ex a few times and love it. The hands look fine to me. Nice size and visibility. Nice bracelet, nice black dial, plain and simple. Could be Rolex nicest watch. High MSRP.

"Small hands" a non-issue. I like the watch & would get one if it only had a date window or I found a good beater for weekends only.

There was so much said on the forum regarding the small hands. When I went to look at the watch in person, it was a non-issue.
It's sort of a "non-Rolex" Rolex without the cyclops. IMO, it's the most elegant and versatile every day sport Rolex. The bracelet is incredible and I love the matte dial. |

I bought one and sold it 2 days later..
Not because of the hands but for some reason once I had it the watch lost it's appeal to me.
A very nice watch no doubt. |

I am aware of the small hands issue but never seem to notice them whenever I see this watch. Such a classic.

Not an issue for me. In fact, I prefer this watch to the Submariner. To each their own, of course. No regrets after 2 months. First Rolex purchase.
In fact, let me say it another way. The only other Rolex I had potential interest in as a new watch was the Explorer II, black. But I am definitely in the minority here. Not a brand loyalist.

I am actually considering the new Explorer I for my next purchase. Think they look great.

as an owner here are my likes and dislikes of 39 mm Exp. Size-perfect, all brushed bracelet- perfect, small hands- never crosses my mind, 3-6-9 without lume or outline - very poor design and by far biggest weakness of watch, over all look - not flashy and borders on boring, but a great all purpose watch that works with a suit or casual.

No lume on 3, 6, 9 is that big a deal? Reminds me of "blackout" models. And I can still tell what time it is at night, without lume on those numerals.
I take some exception to the "very poor design" comment. I think Rolex realized they were changing the lume pattern from the 36MM Explorer 1. But, too each their own.

The 39mm Exp I is my first Rolex after several Omegas. The 36 was too small after the bigger O's. I love the look and the Ian Fleming/James Bond connection appealed to me also. I like the low key look and feel although I'll still be wearing my Speedmaster Pro this week in honor of the shuttle program ending. Doubt that be able to get near Florida this week.
