1930's Rolex golf watch
I was in an antique mart today that had a jewelery/watch shop in the back of the mart that had many interesting and vintage watches for sale. I found an old Rolex there that was quite unique. The shop owner called it the "golf" Rolex. The watch was enclosed in a sterling silver case that had a convex flip-top that looked like the skin of a golf ball. When the top was opened, inside was a manual wind Rolex. The watch also flipped out of the case so the watch could be wound. The watch alone appeared to be around 25mm in diameter and still wore the original Rolex dial and hands. Needless to say, I found it quite interesting.
Has anyone ever seen one of these "golf" Rolex watches? If there is enough interest, maybe I can get back there and obtain a photo of the watch. jP

Here are some pics that I took today. The owner was very reluctant to let me take any photos of the watch. There is a serial number stamped inside the caseback and a matching serial number stamped on the inside of the outer case. It is also hallmarked HF.

Neat!
I have seen several similar period "golf ball" wrist watches, but never one by Rolex.
The dial of this watch looks to be a repaint, it could be possible a Rolex movement has been fitted into a period silver watch case... Interesting novelty watch, I'd wear it and I'm not even a golfist... Thanks for sharing! |

Very interesting watch indeed. The watch has similarities to a Rolwatco… and similar to the Hermetique design that Hans Wilsdorf purchased the exclusive rights to in ’23.
