Which laptop?
Hi guys,
I need some advice for the best laptop out there, please. Would you pick Toshiba, Fujitsu, or Sony? Thanks.

It's all depends on the purpose. When it comes to bussiness IBM and Lenovo are very good. They come with encryption software and a very resistant frame. Maybe you also want to consider the reputation of the after sales customer service
I hope this help a little Pat |

I use a Fujitsu and my wife has a Sony. There pros and cons with both makes so you really need to decide what your priority is. My Fujitsu has bearth for all kinds of memory cards, while my wife's Sony only has an SD and Sony Memory Stick slot. Look carefully at the specs before deciding.

Hi,
I would almost never buy a brand but just look at what is inside. For instance, NEVER buy a Celeron cpu. AMD 64 is good imo. ATI for a graphic card. RAM memory, it's better to have 1024 MB or at least a laptop that supports more than 512 MB for the future. MSI is good for almost all parts, especially motherboards. Make sure that there is room/possibilities for extra hardware if ever you want to do an upgrade. If you want to watch movies, design things etc, the screen width should be important too. Do not forget resolution and frequency. If possible try to find one that has all or most software you need, pre installed. Stick with Windows XP for the time being, Vista is slow and not secure until SP I/II (as were all Windows OS), if you buy a XP system you should get a voucher for upgrading to Vista with the laptop. Expect to pay at least 700-800 euro for a decent one, probably should be around the same price in dollar. If you search like this, you will find one that can last 5 years or more unless your needs change. Happy hunting. |

Bought a HP desktop not even a year ago, was greatly disappointed, very slow and poorly built but their laptops always have had nice reviews.
All my previous systems were custom made and never had any major problems with them, then I bought the HP cause it was reasonably cheap and had an AMD cpu so i thought why not ... first time I kicked my PC |

Thanks for the replies, folks.
It seems nobody was suggesting Toshiba. I've never been wanting a Toshiba for like 10 years because the last one I got was really slow and too much of a problem. However, it was a Pentium 1 back then and now I'm looking at the latest release which is Toshiba Portege M600-E340 with a Core 2 Duo Santa Rosa. I use a Fujitsu at the moment and I'm quite happy with the performance except the dead pixel on the screen. Previously, I used Thinkpad from IBM but ever since it's branded Lenovo I've lost my temptation. Do you guys realize that the life cycle of an Intel processor is only like 5 months now before the new release is coming. If you're interested, look at the links here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Centrin..._Rosa_platform http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_Core_2 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...ge.2C_65_nm.29 From the links it becomes clear that even a laptop was informed to have a Core 2 Duo inside but we have to check which Core 2 Duo. There are a lot of product variations with the same name Core 2 Duo. The latest code name is Santa Rosa with T7300 & T7500 that have 800 MT/s for the Front Side Bus and 4MB L2 Cache. This is exactly why one product of a laptop is more expensive than the other.

As it's been said, it depends on the usage. I can't really speak for anything other than the HP Pavilion that I have, but it's everything I need it to be and more. For average use I can't think of anything better. It's fast as all get out, has a BEAUTIFUL huge monitor, full keyboard, HDMI outputs...it's really slick. I custom built it on HP.com, but I admit it's probably more firepower than what the average user would need in a laptop.

I have had IBM, Dell, and Sony, would not purchase another Sony- Go with IBM or Dell. We have 4 Dell laptops and 2 Dell workstations, exceptional tech support from Dell. Good luck!

TOSHIBA!!!
I'll champion them. I am writing at this moment on my 4 year old Satellite. It's built like a brick out house, ultra reliable, clear screen, nicley laid out key board and enough usb ports for all my needs! I can download music no problems, I run xp with all the updates and AVG free anti virus and have never had a problem After four years of heavy usage the keyboard looks like new and only the track pad has some shine on it. Also I have had no problems with my celeron proccesor. This computer owes me nothing and the only reason I would change it is to get something higher powered to play flight simulator!! other than that it does everything so well. I would without hesitation recommend the brand, it will be my next one! Hope that helps! |

Good choices on CPU and graphics card
The current company that I work for was ATI, recently bought out by AMD. Asus and MSI barebones are decent... I have an MSI barebones with an ATI Mobility 9600 GPU. Quote:

I say Dell. Am on my second Dell now and never any problem. I have a Dell Latitude D420 (my laptop needs to be light and small) with a duo core processor and 1 GB of ram. 12" widescreen. Wifi and bluetooth. It comes with a special mediabay which snaps on the underside. This gives me a DVD writer and more ports.

If I need software for a PC, just go online and within 2 minutes I'll find freeware or shareware that does the job. Try that with Apple not going to happen And I do not mean software for writing a letter or anything like that, very specific software for anything you can imagine. I do like the layout and many ideas they have incorporated in their OS but even then I would never buy an Apple unless it was for the sizes their desktops (mini) and laptops come in. Known Apple for over 15 years always had good ideas but never convinced it was better than MS Windows if you take into account everything. If they would have a good virtual pc that does not crash all the time ... sure. |

Love ATI and Matrox, were state of the art back in those days, especially the Radeons were excellent. Is it still true that MSI produces 90% of all GPU's, even for ATI? ATI/AMD rox, you can never go wrong with them although the Sempron is not all that. |

ATI develops the GPU, but we use other foundries such as TSMC to produce them.
MSI is a partner of ours so they use our ref design to develop their mobo and or graphics card. Quote:

AMDs are battery hogs. They're okay if you don't plan on working "unplugged" for long periods of time. If you plan on running your laptop on battery most of the time, Intel will be a better choice. Just IMHO and personal experience.

That is correct since the second core does not shut down. Future gens will have this corrected.
