Instant or Delayed Gratification

I wanted to get some input on something I've been thinking about too much lately.

I currently don't own any Rolex watch, I wanted my first one to be special and I've been eyeing all of the models.

Just as I've decided a DJ II would be a good first Rolex, I've got it in my head lately that I should keep saving for the ultimate, a Plat DD II, then call it quits...go big, go home, go out with a bang.

My conservative side says, that's way too much for anything, I should stick with the DJ II...(which I know will eventually lead me to purchasing a few more watches down the road including a green sub-c, a 15300 Royal Oak, and maybe the new Exp II)

glad to read your comments.

If you really want the Platinum DD, then you might as well save for it because you will probably end-up with it anyways.

The most expensive watch you will ever own is the watch you got instead of the watch you wanted. You will end up getting the watch you wanted eventually. That being said, which one do you really want? Not the cheapest, not the "ultimate" example. Which one do YOU really want to wear every day?

The choice is ultimately yours.

However when choosing a precious metal watch like the Platinum DDII you can take a huge depreciation cost if you should chose to buy one new and ever attempt to re-sell it. Make sure you really want it before you get it. For that kind of money I would have to seriously consider getting a Patek instead anyway.

If you purchase a DJII the initial cost won't be as costly and if you do chose to get others well you could have more options for your money.

Plat DDII is the ultimate, if that's what you want - I'd suggest saving up now. The longer you wait, the more the price increases you will incur.

If the Platinum DDII is the one that you really want, save up for it.

My advise would be to buy what you want as long as it is within your means. I think it's sad for people to finance a watch or have to save up a long time for one. If someone has to save up. A long time for a Rolex they probably can't afford one as they are most certainly not saving for more important things in life such as retirement.

I will go against the grain here and say grab the DJ II now and enjoy it. First of all it is nice to have a collection with a few watches in it rather than just one grail. As for the Platty DD if it was me, I would want the platty until I got it and then I would have another grail Grab the watch you want it, wear and enjoy

For me the Platty DD is just not even in the realm of possibilities nor my style

I would have to disagree with you on this one. I have saved up and paid cash for every one of my watches. I appreciate each watch knowing that I saved and had time to know that I truly wanted each and every watch I bought. That does not mean that I cannot afford it. Both my wife and I max out our 401K plans and contibute to multiple 529 plans. We also invest in mutual funds and individual stocks outside of our retirement plans. We have at least 6 months savings in the bank. Our cars are all paid for. We have tuition for two children in private school, chinese school, basketball,soccer and swimming lessons. We also live in a million dollar house in the Bay Area which is not saying much. I enjoy collecting watches, but it is not a priority and is more of a hobby. I simply put aside a little money each month to use for recreation and entertainment. Given the nature of the economy I think it is wise to save and contemplate your large purchases rather than making spontaneous decisions. There are so many watches out there that I would like to own, but with limited funds, I have to make sure I am getting a watch that I really want. Sure I could sell 100 shares of Apple and buy a watch but that would not make good financial sense to me. I am just a simple middle class worker who appreciates nice watches.

hunt for pre-owned if you want to save some money. and buy the watch that you keep thinking of because once you have one Rolex, there will almost always be the next one...

That's great advice. A watch purchase should not eat into your funding for much more important things.

If you have to finance the Rolex or buying it will cause a dent in your bank account then you cant afford a Rolex.

Better to save and invest. If you do it right a dividend check will pay for the Rolex in time. You will be better off investing your money if you do not have any right now.

According to what you say you have saved for all the important things in life in addition to your watches. I was referring to those that save or go into debt to buy a luxury item in lieu of saving for the important things in life. We live in an immediate gradification society and hence we are a generation retiring with less than our parents often relying on parents inheritance to fund our own retirement. OK....I'm off the podium now

Sorry, I guess I misconstrued your post. Thank you for clarifying! I appreciate you taking the time to post this up. This is a great forum.

Cash is king, always a good deal when you pay cash. The only way I would do a not cash purchase is to get 36 months free interest

I would recommend you see the Plat DDII in real life before deciding. It's honestly not that impressive, pretty bland looking.

Irrespective of whether or not you get a DDII Plat or not and irrespective of whether you purchase a new or pre-owned one, might i respectfully suggest that you get an used inerim Rolex to have and enjoy while you await the right time to get the DDII Plat.

During the interim period, you will,
1. Have a Rolex to own and enjoy;
2. Not take a very big hit if/when you move out of that particular watch;
3. May not desire the DDII Plat after a while and your options will be better with a previously owned and more popular model to flip out of.

Just my two-cents.

Time is illrelevant. Save for the plat. Time will pass quickly. When I first wanted a Rolex, I made a modest income. I now own 2.
