In search for Birth Yr GMT/Sub

All,

I've been a member here for quite some time, but never got around to posting. Although I try to avoid reading others searching for their birth year watch, I'm afraid the disease has spread to the point of no return.

I'm currently sporting a 2005 Pepsi but it has no "real meaning" to me.

I'd like to ask for some advice and guidance to search for the "perfect" birth year (1988) Pepsi or Sub, with a bias (strong) towards the Pepsi.

I have pondered a birth year sub as well (1984) I would suggest checking the TRF for sale section often, they pop up every once in a while... I only wish the '84 vintage watches didnt have the WG surrounds on the lume...

If it's an addition I would recomend going with a Sub. This way you have one of each. If it is a replacement then go with a Pepsi.

That is my recommendation to myself as well, but I'd imagine the chances of finding two '88 Sub and Pepsi in great condition is pretty slim?

I thought so. I was following a thread on the general forum a while back and your user name sounded very familiar.

I've only flown the Cessna but a close family friend use to fly the U2. And yes he sported the Pepsi as well.

No, what I meant was if it were an addition to your 2005 Pepsi, I would get a sub from 88. If you intend on replacing your 2005 Pepsi I would get an 88 Pepsi.

But anyway, I wouldn't think either an 88 Sub or Pepsi would be that difficult to find.

Sorry, I misread you. It will most likely replace the '05 Pepsi.

I guess I am not sure where I should be looking besides on the forums here. I have contacted a few persons regarding my interest, but no cigar yet.

Think for 1988 you could go for a 168000 sub:) (note the three zeros)

This post brings up a confusing area in terms of when the watch in question is actually made.
For example:
I have a 16750 GMT full kit and always wondered how to figure out the actual year made. I always assumed it's a 1988 based on the following:.

- The serial is R664XXX which according to the database on this site dates it 1987-89.
- My stamped Garantie certificate shows the original purchase date as march 1989 and is marked 564.00.200.3.88 in the lower right hand corner.
- the The "Rolex GMT Master" and the "Your Rolex Oyster" booklets are both dated 1987.
- The supplied calander has 1988/1989.
- The translation booklet is marked 560.00.180.3.88

Am I correct?

Based on the serial number and the info you provided, I would say your GMT is a 1988 vintage. It takes a while to manufacture these watches and then ship them to distributors then to the dealers. If it was sold in March 1989, it would have been manufactured in 1988. Your booklets are also correct. Enjoy!
