"Old" GMT II 16710 and New SS GMT Side by Side

I saw an avatar here where the user has his "old" 16710 black/burgundy GMTII and his new 116710 cermaic bezel GMT II.

Thing is, I thought the new GMT bezel had a larger font size and really stood out, but inthe picture the old GMT seems to make more of an impression.

Anyone have side-by-side shots of the old 16710 and the new GMT II? I'd be very interested,

I lived with the old GMT for nearly 6 years and have had a close look at the new ss GMT.The new GMT is very nice !!

The new GMT is stunning but different enough from its predecessor that the classic 16710 still holds up IMHO.

On the 16710 the anodized aluminum insert has the numbers "silk screened" onto the top of the anodized color.

On the Ceramic, the color is all the way through the insert. The numbers are etched into the ceramic, the etchings are then powder coated with gold, and the ceramic is then polished. The numbers remain the powdercoat color since they are now etched below the surface.

If you scratch the older insert, the anodize coating will scratch off, as well as the number.

On the ceramic, the scratches will not show because you are scratching into a solid color, and the scratch needs to be pretty deep to get down to the numbers..

The life of the ceramic should be many times the life of the anodized aluminum.

It's interesting looking at these two models side-by-side.

The larger block numerals on the new ceramic bezel definitely lend a more masculine, utilitarian look. I like that.

But the over-sized indices, the RolexRolexRolex ring around the dial, and polished center links just kill it for me. In my mind, there's no place for bling on a GMT.

Also, I don't mind the look, but the green 24-hour hand and dial markings are much more difficult to read.

I'll take a classic Pepsi any day.

I'm still considering what my first Rolex will be and considering all the talk about the green 24 hour hand being hard to read my question is ..... Just how many times will you actually be "reading" the 24-hr hand? It seems to me that this hand is really a secondary reference device for a second timezone and would not normally be your primary timing reference hand.

Sure! Really it's about what YOU want out of the watch. If you're attracted to the design elements of the new GMT, and you're NOT going to be jumping timezones enough to really use the GMT hand that much, then I say go for it!

The only real time the green GMT hand would be problematic is if you ARE using it to track multiple timezones consistently, though I know of at least ONE pilot on our forum rocking one and he's never seemed to have a problem!

The GMT hand is the raison d'être of the GMT Master! Without it, it's just another Rolex.

I use the GMT hand all the time. Even the red one could stand to be more visible, IMHO.

Oui, but we don't always buy Rollies because we need their designed tool functions. Will all the SD wearers please slip out of your diving bells and raise your hands!?

Do you still remember what you told yourself when you first bought the 'old' GMT?

I have the old model, and I would not change it for the new.

The bezel on the new is fine. No problem with that. And the larger indices are fine too.

But the polished centre links don't do anything for me, and the RolexRolexRolex is much too bling.

LOL! Lotsa windex on the mirror. I just wash and dry them before the pics and use a lot of canned air to keep the lint off. I do wear gloves usually to set the watches.
