Nick, YOU are asking US?????
We thought you were the expert on Rolex.....and I was quite clearly under the impression that all 31 jewels in a Rolex were FUNCTIONAL ones!! If you are now trying to say that there actually are NON-FUNCTIONAL jewels in a Rolex, I am very dsiappointed. JJ

My guess is that this jewel works in conjunction with several other components that are situated around the edge of the date ring.
The jewel provides a point for enabling the date ring to rotate smoothly when it come time to change every 24 hours, and also with the other positioning components around the edge of the date ring assists in ensuring correct positioning of the date ring. |

Perhaps its the fact that 31 sounds better than 30 and we all know bigger is always better.

Would Rolex put in more jewels just to make up the numbers? Hmm.

Since you was saying "obviously support jewels for calendar ring" and why not using 2 or 4 or even more, but 3. I believed 3 dummy jewels (3 points = balanced) itself will has their self-alignment or blancing in order to allowed the calendar ring balanced.
This is just my thinking... |

Could they be there just for decorative purposes?

Put it there for decoration and then cover it up so no one can see it? Makes no sense.
Maybe what padi said is correct, 31 sure sounds better and bigger than 30.

Rolex does it. And Patek does it to a great extend, also on models that do not have a see-through glass back

Is the part in which this jewel is mounted shared by any other cal. movement? This is also way out in left field I know, but could a jewel, in any way, serve to attenuate vibration? It does not appear the jewel is tall enouth to touch the dial... Maybe it really is for bragging purposes.
By the way, excellent photos.

The reason is to have a spare for the watchmaker; they had to drill the spot to maintain balance, and to equalise the drilled out material put in a non-funtioning jewel so that if the watch went in for service many years later, the spare part would be there in the event that the same type/density/size of jewel was hard to get in the future. If the spare was used, the weight deficeit would be negligible enough. The idea being that the imbalance casued by any possible weight difference would be outweighed by the need for a new jewel, a much more serious requirement.
Just my thoughts, Chris |

Day Function
Being completely ignorant of watch movements of any kind....
Could the hole be a 'place holder' for the Day function that might utilize the basic movement frame.....? |

Nick.
Could it have something to do with the day wheel in a cal 3155? I suppose both movements have the same plate. Just a guess. Jocke |
