This is not a Rolex as an investment question, but a money saving question....
You see Im really torn between the Exp42 and the GMT (pepsi).
I can only afford 1 right now and plan to get the other at a later date. The issue being if I get the GMT now, the EXP42 will no doubt go up in price because of the price increases from Rolex. And I buy the Exp42, I wonder if the GMT prices will go up over time as well. What is the trend with these. Are they going down (slightly) as the get older or are they getting a bit more pricey as the years go on. If the GMT prices have been staying the same of even falling slightly, then at an economic point of view, it would make more sense to get the Exp42. What are your thoughts? Thanks mondo |

I don't understand why you thing the GMT is going to drop. I think it will hold it's current value better than the Explorer. Also in a few months the serial flippers will be selling the explorer. It's hype hasnt came close to what the hype was for the SubC or GMTIIC. According to ADs I've been told the Exp II will be available to all before Christmas. It won't even get close to the rarity of the Daytona either.

I was not suggesting that the GMT would drop in price. I was just wondering what you all thought it would do. Drop, Stay or Climb.
I too think it would probably stay the same, but wanted all the experts to chime in :) |

Buy what you want and like without concern on future value. Its a watch. Wear it and enjoy it. Rolex holds its value well compared to other brands. If you buy right and wear for many years you can possibly sell for around what you paid originally or slightly less in some cases. That is difficult to do with other brands in the same price range.
Good luck with your choice. Let us know what you decide. |

If you are asking about prices for a new watch, Rolex tends to increase the prices on it's entire catalog, not just certain watches.
If you are asking about resale values, there may be cheaper GMTs available in slightly-older serials. A wristwatch is a consumer product, not an investment. It depreciates as soon as you put your name on the warranty card. Modern Rolexes are made in very large quantities, and are thus unlikely to become sought-after "vintage" commodities like some of the rarities from the 60's or 70's. |

Rolex tends to raise it prices about twice a year. Models which are discounted can go up in price which is what appears to be happening with the GMT II and as the new ones go up in price so some of the old ones tend to follow.
So I'll take a stab in the dark and say it might be better to get the new one first, then come back and get the older one a little bit later. Oh wait a minute the sooner you get the discounted model the easier it will be to get, the better overall condition you can expect to get it in, and the easier it will be to get. My advice: Instead of trying to predict the future, get the one you want the most first. Because who knows what the future holds for sure and at least this way you will have gotten the one you want the most first. It is always possible that latter on you will have changed your mind about the second one anyway.

Get the Explorer now. By the time you're ready for the GMT they may have come out with pepsi ceramic.

Explorer for me at the moment.
Buying new though this type of thinking wouldnt be at the forefront of my mind. Can see the question if you are constantly flipping second hand models. |

All of the MSRPs will go up. Exp42 is probably selling for a higher percentage of its MSRP right now (due to novelty) than the GMT is. Over time that percentage will decrease.
It would seem that GMT now/Exp42 later would be less total outlay, but buy what you like. |

I am not an "expert" so maybe not the opinion you requested.....since you want both, I'm not going to suggest the - get the one you want phrase. If it was me and I was definately going to get both sooner or later, I would get the GMT now and catch the Exp from the for sale section later. Maybe a fluke or I got a good deal initially, but I got a Pepsi about a year and a half ago, didn't like it and traded it in a couple of months. The same watch has is selling for $1500-2000 more than what I paid.
I think the Pepsi is going to continue to increase and not hold steady. |

I would say get the GMT and the Exp pre-owned later on. I don't think the new Exp will remain popular longterm compared to the GMT.

The Exp will command top $ for at least the next 3 - 6 months. After that, you'll be able to get it at a bit of a discount. It is one cool looking watch and may not flip like some of the other new models like the LVC Sub.

Buy the one you want the most first. There's no reason to expect a significant difference in future price increases between the two models, even if you correctly guess the one that will appreciate the fastest.

GMT now or later
Have to be honest, all of the buy what you really like comments get to me. You expressed an interest in owning both, so, you will get what you really want.
As someone who who spends time on the other side of the counter, I would recommend picking up the GMT first. This is due to two issues, the first of which being that steel sport models have done nothing but climb historically. Second, the new Ex2 will become available by those who trade their new watches like I change socks sometime in the not too distant future. But, there is no crystal ball, only trends. Thankfully Rolex has a long history and the trends seem to be extremely consistant. Good luck!! |

Besides, IMHO I doubt Rolex will increase prices once again this year since lately the global economical situation is taking a turn for the worse and the depreciation of the Swiss Franc last week. |

GMT II's are priced about 20% higher now than a year ago. This is for a watch complete with the original boxes, books, accessories and warranty paper. A year ago you could pick one up for $3700 to $3800. Now it is hard to find one for less than $4500 here on the forum. Prices on ebay and with dealers are higher still. For value, you can't beat a pre-owned 16710 GMT II or the older GMT's. If you like the new Explorer more than the GMT II, get the Explorer. But, you should expect some depreciation on the Explorer the next several years while the GMT II should continue to appreciate in value.

Tough call... I would say try them both and see what you like the best. the reason I say this is because they are such different watches. I own both and IMHO the GMT wears quite small compared to everything else in my collection (all ceramic) with the exception of the Exp 42.
Have you tried on the 16710 yet? Here is a pic of my Exp42 and my 16710 coke
