Hong Kong as a vacation destination ?

I'm toying with the idea of give this place a shot for my next vacation. I've been to HK back in 1987 as a young kid and loved it back then. Beautiful weather, stunning architecture and incredible shopping opportunities (as a kid I was into video games....go figure).

So,would you consider HK as a valid place for a vacation ?? Rolex shopping would not be included...,but I would include a couple of days visiting Macao's Vegas style resorts.

Depends what do you call relaxation , lying on the beach and getting drunk until noon doesn t make sense-at least for me-, exploring a nice city ,drifting with the crowd enjoying the local culinarities -and got drunk at the dinner:-)- is just fine.
been HKG two times -same period of the year-it was great clean fine well organized but still oriental ,the good thing you can go to Macao to gamble alittle or just enjoy that city.

I go to HK twice a year on a combined business and holiday. I used to spend a few days in HK before going to Shenzhen and Guangzhou, then another day or two, before flying to Bangkok. HK is great for shopping and eating, but Shernzhen is catching up, even overtaking.
I am off again in two weeks. This time I won't even spend those few days in HK.
If you haven't been for a while, I would suggest a few days would be enough, then fly off somwhere else.

Guess I must be shallow. Lying on a beach and getting drunk at any time of the day or night, is pretty much the meaning of life for me

if you want a longer holiday why don't you combine hk, macau with another se asian destination? plenty of flights available from hk thus you can see a bit of urban life, history and nature as well.

if you are in hk, try the rainbow restaurant on lamma island.

My wife is from HK, so I used to go every year to visit in laws and also visit on vacation.

It is a highly cosmopolitan city, with a fast paced lifestyle.

If you want to vacation, take a ferry to Macau, visit some of the quieter attractions, such as New Territories, Ocean Park (on a weekday), or HK Disneyland (also on a weekday).

The city areas (TST, Central, Mong Kok and Causeway Bay) are full of energy. If you like that pace for a vacation, go for it!

Not my idea for a holiday although interesting for a few days. I last went there as a start to a trip to Vietnam and Maylasia so only spent 3 days in HK including a day trip to Macau.

Many more interesting places to visit once you've made the flight that far IMO.

If you haven't been to, you should visit Macau!

It only takes an hour ferry to Macau from HK. Starting at mid-day to wee hours would be best to enjoy the gaming atmosphere. Many locals do not speak english, but from the ferry terminal, hotels have their complimentary shuttles (til midnt) - so this should make it a bit easier for you.

You can use HKD in Macau, but you cannot use Macau Patacas in HK.

The Wynn, MGM's Lion's Bar (fun starts at past midnt), Venetian, and the newly-opened Galaxy are must-visits.

If you have been here, then you know the ropes, and know to invest in a face mask from all the non-stop smoking inside the casinos (and almost everywhere).

Going to HK without Rolex shopping? You should at least check it out. Though never been there myself, I've heard there are plenty of gray market Rolex's to be had there for decent prices.
