A sad tale about holy grail ownership...

Hello All,
I just read a really sad tale on another forum which I wanted to share with you all. (I hope I did not break any forum rules by doing this).

The guy has been a long term wis and Patek lover.

I remember this guys posting about finally receiving his holy grail watch and crying.... Now he has sold this piece.

I felt so bad for this guy.

Have other members here sold off a precious piece know they will never get a similar piece back again?

POSTED ABOUT RECEIVING HIS GRAIL AND CRYING
Me and my grail...........
I've had it for 13 months now, a PP 5127R, sold 5 watches to help fund it.
It's now my daily wear, put on when I get out of bed and taken off when I get back into bed. I suppose I do use it for telling the time but I just gaze at it sometimes admiring it's sheer classic elegance, IMVHO.
It's facination is just as strong for me now as it was when I first got it.
I've lusted after a PP for the last 25-30 years.
We WIS'ers tend to be a fickle lot and I wonder how many 'grail watches' are true 'grail watches' and not just passing fancy 'grail watches'.
When I got the 5127R home from my AD and split open the poly sleeve I literally had tears in my eyes, I know.....'great softy'.
A true 'grail watch' and worth all those years waiting for.
Thank's for reading.
D in W

FINAL POSTING AFTER SELLING HIS PRECIOUS PATEK
5127R.....reasons for selling.
No doubt some are astonished that I would contemplate selleng my 5127R...The most beautiful watch ever made or will ever be made...IMVHO
My wife would have asolutely no idea of how to go about selling it should the need arise, we are both pensioners.
Insurance and security were also becoming a problem.
Money is not the reason for the sale, the watch is in 'as-new' condition (IMVHO) even after 5+ years of daily wear.
I thought I'd sell the watch while I'm still able and save my dear wife any possible hassle later dowm the line.
This is a little poem that I posted on TZ-UK that I thinks sums it up.
...................................
Now, 'It's just me watch' that I strap on every morning and take off every night.
The most beautiful of watches, but now, 'It's just me watch'.
Do I gaze at it's beauty in awe, as I once did before.
No, now, 'It's just me watch'.
Sad, isn't it.
....................................
Any regrets.......No.
Thanks for reading.
Dave

The two saddest things in the world are?

Not getting what you want and getting what you want.

So he's selling to save his wife the hassle later. Sorry but he isn't getting my sympathy vote on this one.

How about;

I don't get it either. He bought a watch, he used it for a while, he sold it.
Fascinating.
I'd just keep it to the end and say, "by the way, the Patek's worth about 10 grand." a few times before I go. Fortunately I have people to give my valuables to.

I'm not really feeling anything from this. If he liked the watch so much, he should be buried with it. We can still be WIS in the afterlife

Yeah, poem sucks.

The PP will only gain in value from now to whenever, why go so dramatic when simple instructions would suffice?

people get thrown for a loop when they see a topic that doesn't have to do with a rumored price increase.

The poem is really really bad....the story does not touch me at all. If one needs money, for whatever reason then you sell stuff...thats the way we do things in our society.
If the man were dirt poor and had to sell his pet goldfish to put food on the table then I would probley shed a tear. Although Im a wis, not all watch stories are interesting.
putting that aside, Thanks for posting a thread which you wanted to share..
Thats what this forum is all about....

lol. That poem cracks me up. There's no comma after the 'me' before watch, so I can't help but read it as someone who speaks poor English meaning to say "it's just my watch". Me instead of My. If you read it with my's instead of me's, it actually makes more sense, but has nothing to do with loss... Especially that first line!

Ha ha. I wasn't suggesting he does speak English poorly. That's just how I chose to read it, due to the small grammatical error...

Now that I think more about it, I got $5 that says for whatever reason ... his wife is MAKING him sell that watch.

WIFE: "Dear ... I've been thinking and I have decided that me Mum will be moving in with us. We will need to add a bedroom on the the back of the house, so you will have to sell that silly Grail thing of yours."

OP: "But Dear, It's Me Watch". "I have even crafted a poem about it".

WIFE: "And it shall be YOUR ARSE if me Mum is not happy". "Now sell it".

He says he has no regrets, why on earth should we feel sad for him!?

IMO personal circumstances decide such decisions When you have one or more Rolex watches and feel there is no one worthy to pass on your precious collection, sell it and get the money back when your one foot is in the grave. But then each to his own!

it sounds profound as in,

there comes a point where "its just a watch."

i believe these sentiments were somewhat echoed by another TRF member recently.

another great poet said...

don't love nothin' that can't love you back.
