First post! Can men wear mid-size watches?

This is my first post so thank you for a terrific forum.

About a year ago, I was given a mid-size Rolex as a graduation present. But it was a mid-size watch and (being an American) had never seen men wear a mid-size watch before.

Since I travel a fair amount for work, I've noticed that men outside of the U.S. sometimes wear them. But generally speaking, I only see women wearing them.

I've never been able to wear the watch because of these concerns.

But I'd love to hear everyone's thoughts please.

Welcome to TRF, Daniel.

The mid-size has been categorised by Rolex as only 31 mm in their catalogue.

Is yours a 31 mm model or slightly larger? In places like the Far East and Asia, the mid-size is pretty popular as people there have a smaller bone structure and hence smaller wrists.

Some men wear earrings...Seriously, smaller-wristed men can pull it off. On an "average" size guy it may look strange.

I think a lot of us have struggled with this at one time or another - deciding which case size is best. It's a pretty personal choice.

By all means, if you're comfortable wearing a mid-size, go for it But by the sounds of it (you not wearing it), perhaps moving up to a traditional 'men's size' would be better. Best to go try the different variations at an AD.

I'm a gal and find that I just can't wear anything smaller than a 36mm! Strange as it may sound, I'm used to larger watches and even a 34mm feels weird on my wrist! But that's me

First of all, welcome to TRF, Dan. Glad you found our friendly forum.

It sounds like you're uncomfortable with a smaller watch. If so, why not trade it in for a larger size that would be more suitable for you.

The DJs and DDs run 36 mm. The sport watchs, like the Sub, SD and GMT are in the 39-40 mm range.

If you can swing the trade (although it will probably cost you something out of pocket), I would try on several before making a decision. Believe it or not, you may end up deciding that the mid-size is right for you.

I've seen a man w/ the boy size (TT Datejust), and it does not look nice at all (my opinion). I even know the guy.

Thanks to everyone for the kind words. I normally wear a "full-size" Movado as my daily watch and the mid-size rolex has always looked odd to me -- which is why I've never taken it out of the house.

I've been thinking of selling it, but feel bad because I'll take a huge hit on the price (well, not me -- but since I was the gift recipient...).

I didn't realize that I could trade it in. Do most dealers offer such a service?

Some ADs will take a watch in trade. You can probably do better selling privately, but if you don't want the hassle, you can check with some ADs as to what they would do for you as a trade.

If you're in NOVA, try Lenkersdorfer in Tysons or their sister store Lilljenquist & Beckstead in Tysons Galleria.

A solid grey dealer with a brick and mortar store. Lots of members have purchased watches from Alan Furman, and since they deal in pre-owned Rollies, they may give you a great deal to take a new one from them, as well. Not a bad place at all to do some research!

I have a very small wrist (approx 6"-6.25") and I feel uncomfortable wearing divers watches like Planet Ocean and such.
However, I do not look out of place wearing one because of my frame.
Based on looks alone, the size of the body will probably determine if the watch will look small or hugh.
As far as comfort is concerned, the size of the wrist will be the deciding factor (I think).

Hey my father-in-law wears a ladies watch, and he doesn't have small wrists. (No he is STRAIGHT).

He says it feels like he isn't wearing a watch, much more comfortable.

Hi Daniel, welcome aboard!

If you're not comfortable wearing a smaller watch, then by all means sell it and buy the one you want. Trading a watch in is pretty much like trading in a car, they'll give you wholesale price only. You'd be further ahead to sell it privately then buy the one that sings your name.

You need to wear what is comfortable for you and what looks right, TO YOU, depending on your wrist size; I wear an Explorer and anything bigger-like a II or whatever would look like an alarm-clock hanging off my wrist and a little ridiculous!

You have already received very excellent advice from the other members, so I would just wish you good luck finding the right Rolex for you (which you would find by trying on some Rolex models on your wrist and see which one "smiles back at you" the most).

I think many of us would have had no problem with the midsize until we started wearing the larger sports Rollie size, and then we adjusted our perceptions up as to what fits. I have a beautiful midsize Omega SMP, and I am actually wearing it as I type. It is a really nice watch, same big lume markers, just a smaller forum for it all. I like it with certain dress shirts and certain suits.

Ruben is right, Dan. AF has a brick & morter operation about 5 minutes from me on Rockville Pike (although I have to admit I've never been in there). Several members have bought from them and have been satisified. Even the one time there was a problem, they quickly rectified it.

If you're in the NOVA area, you may want to take a ride up there and stop in to talk to them about a trade.

My father has small wrists he wears a mid-size I almost need to buy an additional link with my watches so I could never wear his watch. Nothing wrong with a mid-sized watch on a man. I have seen many men wearing mid-sized Rolex watches.

When I used to visit Hong Kong in the mid-90s, I saw mostly mid-size TT DJs on most of the people there. Very popular size in that part of the world.

You've been making several futile attempts at getting your questions answered.

My suggestion to you is you start up a new thread and introduce yourself properly.

That way, these members will take notice and try and reply to your queries.

The Prince is a superb looking watch, but is NOT very popular amongst most of us. For that kind of asking price, we would much rather be sporting an Oyster model.
