Confused about a 1680

Saw something on fleabay that caught my eye:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1967-Rolex-S...ht_5563wt_1189

I'm not a 1680 expert, but I thought that anything prior to about 70 - 71 was going to be a meters first. Not only that, weren't the first 1680's reds? Finally, I have never seen one prior to 1969 with a date?

I'm just confused so can someone give me a brief history lesson.

Thanks,

Pete

Either the serial is wrong in the listing, or it has a Service Dial. Serials before ~2.4m should be meters first. A service dial would explain no Red lettering and the ft. first.

The Sub date was launched in 1966.

I hope this helps.

Right, i know what the books say.....1966.....but I have never seen one prior to 69 and I have never seen any reference to anything less than 69 in here as well.......this is odd. I was thinking that the serial was wrong, and since it was sold in 75 that maybe the dealer swapped out the dial way back when as a service for someone at the AD and replaced it with the most current white?

But still.........anyone ever seen one prior to 69 with a date? 2.1 mil is my earliest reference that I can locate.

The 1680 Submariner was released circa 1965/1966 - depends which reference book you read. They had red dials, therefore this would be a replacement dial in this auction. While it is an original dial, it is not original to the watch.

Here is a pic of my 1970 Submariner with a replacement Rolex tritium dial. It is original Rolex, but same here, it didn't come this way from Rolex when it was new.
