Rolex Airking with Sunburst effect dial

Recently i got hold of this Airking from a friend. Not consider a vintage as it is W series. Apparently, the "sunburst" effect on the dial is cause by the reaction between the dial and the tritium sweeping hour and second hands. The original color dial is silver in color, but over time there is a rosy gold tone appearing at the outer dial.

I did some research, i saw another example of this appearing. It looks like it happened to a particular batch of dial manufacture for airking.

Any comments?

Very interesting. Perhaps you could reduce the bottom picture to about 1000px wide so that it would all fit on the screen.

Congratulations!

I had something like this happen to my Air King dial...

...except it was some loose screws causing some parts of the movement to self-destruct into fine metal powder escaping through the hole in the dial.

Very pretty actually - until I realized that something just wasn't right...

Yours is a silver dial as well? If it is due to fine metal powder that escaping through the hole , then the effect should start from the center but for my case it is not. Do you have a picture.

I believe that kyleL has an Air-King that his uncle owned that has that effect on the dial.

No, Jocke. I guess my 20" monitor has become obsolete without my realizing it.

Maybe I need to upgrade to 52" and stay ahead of the curve.

Very interesting dial. Thanks for sharing it.
Methinks some other source would be the more likely cause. This is too rare - wouldn't all of the Air-Kings with that dial be similarly affected?
Just my 2˘

I've seen this before on Silver dial'd AK's, OP's, Date's, and DJ's of the era. Caused by too much sun and humidity exposure.

Yes... silver dial - but it is just a coincidence. The 'effect' did, indeed, radiate from the center.

I am a week from being home to take a picture of the original dial - I'm sure this thread would have run its course by then

We'll see...

It's pretty when the fading is relatively equal.

Just curious, if it is due to sun and humidity exposure, the "effect" should be the whole dial right and not on the outer ring of the dial.
