A friend of mine is looking for the "best" possible watch for under $400 shipped. Non digital. He prefers it to be on a rubber strap. 40mm or larger...

If such a watch exists please let me know.

You could always suggest the trusted Luminox Navy Seal

I have seen a lot of vintage Omega Seamasters out there in the $400-$450 range. He could probably get one for under 4. They are a great timepiece to own.

Isn't the Hamilton Khaki Field watch right around 400? Actually, it might push towards 5.

That'd be an auto w/ ETA movement - great value for the coin...

Some ideas....you can also put a nice rubber strap on any of these:

Modded Seiko 007.....here's what I had done to mine:

Seiko SRP043K1 (Spork) - Sells new for about $350.00 - A hefty, very accurate watch with a Sinn-style dial...I dressed it up with a waterproof Di Modell Chronissimo leather strap:

A Seiko/Yobokies "Fifty-Five Fathoms" mod....well under $400.00:

+1 for all of Trandy's recommendations. I love the Seiko Spork and Seiko 007. Those are two of my favorites under $400. Even have some money left over for modding with those.

Another good one is a pre-owned Steinhart Ocean 1 variety in 42mm. Add a few bucks for a 22mm rubber strap of his choice. Best bang-for-the-buck Sub/GMT homage on the market, IMO.

If by "non-digital" you mean a mechanical movement, you're looking at brands such as Seiko, Citizen, Orient, Bernhardt, Hamilton, Victorinox and a handful of others I can't recall at the moment (my advice would be to stay away from Invicta).

If by "non-digital" you simply mean a traditional analog dial, that opens up a bunch of quartz powered options, several of which have already been mentioned, and I would add Christopher Ward to that list.

Three brands came in my mind when I read your post.

- Seiko
- Citizen
- Bulova

They aren't what I will call deluxe but they are very good, beautiful and, in my opinion at least, tough. You can find some with rubber bands but otherwise I'm sure you can find a separate one for almost nothing.
