That is one sexy camera. MSRP actually is cheaper than what I would have guessed. Massive increase in megapixels and all the other advances over the D3x, at less than half the price. If they can keep the ISO comparable to the D700, they are going to sell a boatload of these to enthusiasts.

I have the 14-24 on a 700 and love it! I am still learning how to shoot so wide, but it great for landscapes and even did some shots at a few skate parks. They turned out pretty good.

However, lens that wide are speciality lenses and don't get too much shoot time. I also trying to figure out how to manage sunsets without a ND filter.

I would love to have the 300 2/8 or longer! There is no end to "needing" gear!

I have depleted my watch fund which is not good.

Also, are you a patch guy Grissom?

I have been wanting to get into more long rang telephotos, lately, and have successfully resisted the 300 2.8 VRII, as well as the 200-400, and now may allow myself to compromise with the Sigma 50-500 (which is probably much better than "i" am, anyways). On ongoing battle, so it seems!!

An expensive game, as is watches, unfortunately.......and I have to contend with my crazy obsession with police memorabilia, as well.....

To address something in an earlier post, no we didn't pass the resolution limit of lenses yet.

The D800 has the same pixel pitch as the D7000 and we didn't have this conversation then. The Nex-7 has even finer pixels and we didn't discuss it then either.

The D800 sensor is roughly the D7000 sensor scaled to Full Frame (with newer technology). If Sony scales the NEX-7 sensor to FF it will be something like 54-56 Mpxl.

Expect more pixels in the coming months/years.

If you post a 36mb photo.....you will get banned

The D800 is too big, it is only for professional usage.

On the other hand the new Nikon P310 (to be released on 22 March 2012 worldwide) is an awesome pro-sumer camera. It is stunning with the white body and black lens. At 16mp it is all you could ever need especially with the VR technology and a 1.8 lens.

End of story Do I have to give you guys all the ultra cool inside information.

I don't know ... you get an almost unlimited cropping potential which would let you convert a wide (e.g. 1.8) normal lens (35, 50) into a wide longer lens still maintaining good resolution (or a long into a longer) ... Whether it is worth it or not, that's pretty neat ... 200mm - f1.8 for a couple hundred bucks sounds nice, right?

Cropping only blows everything up, increasing pixel size. It doesn't change the focal length of a lens so there's none of the optical characteristics of a particular lens. There is no compression of foreground or background with a telephoto and no expansion of space with a wide angle. It may be the same relative frame size, but it's not the same look.

I've been waiting for a FF body from Nikon for the better part of 2 years.
With the D800 it is very easy to shoot with lower resolution, even in DX mode it has better resolution than the D300s.
At 36Mpixel it will be awesome on landscape and architecture, especially with the 14-24 F/2.8. I love this lens.

Take a look at the Lee filters SW150 for the 14-24. Awesome filter!

Thanks for the info. I might be ordering the Lee filters real soon.

I am torn, I am very tempted to sell my 700 and 300s for an 800, but what I really "need" is the D4.

I usually like to upgrade bodies, but the D800 is out of my price range. I thought my D700 was expensive when I paid $2100 for it.

Here is another interesting option from Fotodiox for the 14-24.

Hmm, has the Fotodiox got any GND filter possibility?
Also, I would really love to get a big stopper (10 stop ND filter) for the 14-24...

BTW I put my name down for a D800 today at a local Munich store. 2799 euros so after tax rebate it should be around 24xx euros.

this is an exciting camera that will hopefully propel the whole industry forward. it's basically turning 35mm cameras into medium format.

definitely will need some more HD space and bigger cards.

Reviving this thread...
I took delivery of my D800 last week and I have been loving it yet hating it...
36M pixel means more than quadruple my storage requirements, as well as needing to upgrade my computer for the required post work :-(

Anyway, a couple of shots (first one has been posted here in another thread.)

The D-800 is a game changer. Can't wait to get mine. I ordered the "e" version. As far as the 14-24 lens..it's fantastic, super sharp and virtually no distortion. With the added megapixels of the D-800, you can crop whatever you need out of the image.

All this megapixel stuff is now just one-upmanship mine is bigger than yours etc, and not really needed, unless you are going to make a picture the size of a house or bigger. While Nikon make fine cameras and lenses and were my personal choice in the days of 35mm when I was using underwater.Today even with a 3-5 or 10 megapixel camera you can produce excellent pictures. And no matter the megapixels its still down to the person behind the camera who composes that picture and presses the shutter. Today with digital photography perhaps some of the photographers skill has been taken over by a computer camera, and with computer editing software.

I have been on Amazon's list since February for the D800.
Over the weekend, I have cancelled my order and am waiting now for the (hopefully) soon announced D600.

It depends but most, if not all (why would you buy this camera to shoot JPG?) people shooting this camera would be shooting in NEF(RAW)
FX NEF(RAW) 12-bit= 57mb
FX NEF(RAW) 14-bit= 74MB

D3200 is on my want list. Only 24.2meg. Should be a decent upgrade from my d40, 6.1meg.

That should help my crops look a little better and my 8x10s sharp!!!!

My biggest problem with my D3X is I can't remember how to make it do some of the things I want it to. I happy to see this photo thread, because there are some fantastic photos being posted by TRF users.

it is actually an amazing sensor. apparently you can push the images 6 stops in post processing with little to no noise. it is a totally different technology than what canon uses, and will probably lure many landscape and professional photographers over. that said, i am still happy with my newly acquired 5d (originally announced in 2005!)

I am happy with my D5000, should have waited for the 1080p D3000 that is pretty much the only difference. But for me the novice guy you can't beat the quality of my Nikon
