Sad day...

I'm a little down at mouth this evening since I had to shoot one of the old horses this morning.

Hector was 23 and I had owned him more than half my life.

He was a grand old lad... He'd been a bit of a boy in his younger days but mellowed into an old gent. Because of his size he'd gone through his joints (I know how he felt!) and wasn't getting around so well. The weight had started to drop off him and this morning enough was enough.

So long, big fella...

I am very sorry and sad with you Mark, the attachment we have to our animals is one of family. Hector looks like he was a wonderful horse. I can only offer that I truly believe he is in a better place right now, with no pain, able to run in the meadows again, and happy. And someday, when our time is done, you will be riding him again.

Thanks guys! He was an impressive big lad.

Paul, I reckon if I ever ride him again he might just have to fire me into the ground like a dart the first time in revenge for this morning! That would be just his sense of humour!

Well... With those heel spurs of yours...

Seriously, I was just talking about that with the Long-Haired General. My knees are shot, my shoulder dislocates now and then, I've got tennis elbow... If I was a horse I'd be long gone!

It's such a shame but they just can't function like we can when things fall apart.

He looks like he was a good lad Grumpy.

Sorry for your loss.
It's a wrench that's for sure. We had to put old Sasha out of her troubles not long ago in the same way.
Go and jump on one the young'ns and teach it to go like the old lad.

I'm sorry for your loss. I know that people on farms look at their animals a bit differently than we do, but I'd never be able to put down an animal myself. I'd have to call in a vet to do it. Not trying to hijack your thread, or pass and judgement believe me!!! Again sorry for your loss.

I totally understand were you're coming from.

For me, though, I see it that I took care of him for 17 years and I saw that through to the end. I've seen a lot of vets do it well but also a lot make a mess of it... I'd rather the responsibility was mine.
The big lad always hated vets and would have been wound up by the smell/strange person.
As was he trusted me and was happy and relaxed right up to the end. Tough as it is I don't feel i betrayed that trust and I'm also proud to say I know he was "gone" before he hit the ground.

So sorry to hear this, Mark. I understand why you did this instead of having a vet handle things. He was a beautiful horse.

Ps - I'm sure if he could have chosen how to leave this life he wouldn't have had you do any different.

Thanks again guys.

What makes it tougher is I originally rode him for an old friend and, when he died, I inherited Hector. There are a lot of memories there.

I'm happy in my own mind that it was the right thing to do and done the right way but I'll miss seeing him towering over all the other horses when I walk out to the back field.
