Strange Unicorn watch

Look at that strange piece:
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/140684716605?...#ht_3082wt_886

I find Unicorn watches quite interesting due to he Rolex connection. But the above piece I find a bit weird. Look at the roman numerals. The 4 o'clock position. The roman numerals are wrong (Should be IV instead of IIII). Do you think this is a fake or modified dial, or is this something watch companies did back then and I'm not aware of?

Thanks!

Be interesting to see if seller responds, if at all. Otoh, seller may truly not know build year and just be speculating.

I don't know anything about unicorn watches or their connection to Rolex. If you can, will you provide some history on that for me?

As for as the IIII, it looks like the dial has been refinished sometime in the past to me based on the poor lettering quality.

There are a few threads about Unicorn here on the forum. It's very interesting:

or

I think I'm with you on the dial. It looks to be of low quality.

I got an answer about the age from the seller:
"This is Vintage about atleast 25 yearrs old by Swiss Rolex Company. Thanks"

That would make it a 1987 or older. He sure is right about that

You now have one of two choices. You can report it to eBay as a fraud based on the sellers response. Or, you can simply let the auction die a slow death. My bet is that any serious party will know that Rolex severed it's ties long ago and not touch it.
