Another reason to buy Rolex

So...I'm thinking about buying another watch. It's addictive.

I've got a 16610 and a Suunto Observer Titanium (don't talk to me about the ultimate "tool"--this thing can calibrate the ballistic computer on an Abrams tank!!). I'm just starting the collection, and I want a chrono, a dress watch, a white dial, and a GMT.

I also want a cross section of great brands and designs.

So I'm thinking Exp-II and Omega Deville chrono. So I head over to the "ultimate Omega forum" and start asking some questions about Devilles. Crickets. All those buggers want to talk about is their POs and SMPs and Speedys. No breadth of interest and knowledge. At least, if it's out there, nobody is offering.

I've never seen a post--even/especially a newb pos--on this forum that hasn't been exhaustively answered. And, if there's no knowledge or specific interest to share, folks are at least getting a dozen or more "welcome to the forum" posts.

TRFers RULE!! Maybe I'll get a white daytona (like that'll happen) and a DJ on a black croc strap. I'll still need a GMT though...

Hi CPTL - For myself I wouldn't depend too much on what the Omega forum guys say - it's you doing the selecting and the buying.

I've got to say, your post is just a bit confusing , the reason being that you need to narrow down and focus in on the watch that REALLY jazzes you. If you love it, most likely others do too.

So, before you buy, take a lot of time to zero in on a brand and a particular watch. When you fall in love, then pull the trigger. JMO. Cheers, Larry.

If you want a GMT and you like croc/leather I'll commit blasphemy...

The Omega DeVille GMT is nice..It only comes in leather, but if you're looking to set off your collection and you have a nice DJ or a Daytona....It might be worth a look..

You want a bitchen' chrono, look at the IWC Pilots chrono....killer..

Oh...Rolex Rules...

Hi, and welcome to TRF that Rocks!

I think you've come to a great forum for advice, regardless of whether people steer you to Rolex or not, you will get feedback.

Of course, we are partial to Rolex's, but I admit that myself and others have other brands too. Although I have turned into a solid Rolex fan.

If you are looking for a chrono, Rolex offers you the Daytona. I have one and love it. BUT it is not the heatedly sought after SS version but the TT version with black dial which I prefer. So, if you are interested in a Daytona, have a look at all the options of dials, bracelets, colors. It's a fantastic looking piece.

As for the Omega, if that is the one you really want, have patience and continue to look around at other forums devoted to watches. You can find many if you Google around enough.

I too started out wanting a collection of different maker watches... choosing my Daytona as the first Rolex and then figuring I'd get others from several more makers. But then I got hooked on Rolex's and felt I didn't want other brands anymore. I've now got a very tiny collection of Rolex's and I am an extremely and very happy owner.

Finally, I hope you are looking at real watches in brick and mortar stores, trying them on and getting a feel for them and what they look like on you. That's also very important because online pics can paint a totally different view from the real thing in person.

Good luck and give yourself time. Looking for what you want and then finding it is actually half the fun of the "watch craze" and owning them.

Personally I like Omega and they make an excellent choice. If you are interesting in Chronographs and some additional options, well, I might suggest you look at:

Tutima FX UTC (Reliable 7750 caliber ETA--formerly called Valjoux--Chronograph movement. Lower range price

Fortis B42 Fleiger Chronograph (Reliable ETA 7750 caliber movement, same as above), solid performer, lower range price

If you want to go a little higher in price, I would look at: Brequet XX or XXI Transatlantique, IWC, Girard Perregaux and Chopard, all of which make fine distinctive chronographs. There are of course even more expensive choices, but I will stop there.

Oh, I almost forgot: you owe it to yourself to also check out the Rolex Daytona and the Zenith Chronomaster, both have very solid chronograph movements which are proprietary.

See, that's what I'm talking about.

I've started with the Rolex Sub (where else would you start??), but I plan to buy additional pieces over time. Eventually, I'll want a GMT, chrono, dress watch, etc. Looking is all part of the fun, right? This takes years, right??

But, my point was this: I saw the DeVille GMT and Chrono versions--they caught my eye. I went on the Omega forum and asked some questions...and got NO responses.

I come on the Rolex forum, and you guys are all over it--even with comments about Omegas!!

(And they think they have the better forum??)

Glad to see Fortis mentioned here....this is a very well-designed, solid timepiece that in my opinion delivers as much bang for the buck as any out there. Seems to fly under the radar, not often seen, but I had a B-42 Marinemaster, which was outstanding on a number of levels, and very well-priced too. The company also has a long history.

But once you get a Rolex, everthing else seems to pale in comparison......... I dunno...........

Best,

Chris

If you don't mind a gigantic watch

I bought a white dialed SS Breitling Super Avenger, and it is terrific. Good looking. Sweep second hand in red is visible all night along with markers and minute and hour hand. Arabic numerals in raised stainless. Very sturdy. Not overly expensive compared to Rolex.

Or if you want to go upscale, how about a GP Laureato Evo3 in stainless or titanium?

I like the Deville but it seems to resell poorly. I saw a gold limited edition of a very small number that had painfully depreciated in value. I think the subdials could be better balanced, as well. As for a white face, the SS Daytona is always popular, but the Explorer II is uncommon and very elegant. The black painted surrounds truly have a pleasing contrast to the white dial.
