170hp out of a 1.4L is very impressive. I remember back in the early 2000’s when Honda had their 2.0L making 240hp. 10+ years later and we arrive again.

The Viper has actually been a profitable segment for Dodge/Chrysler over the years.

I think a lot of enthusiasts would be angry if they dropped the V-10 for a puny 4-6cyl bi-turbo, I know I would be. I was actually a little bummed when the 8.7L rumor turned out to be false.

A major (needed) improvement made to compensate for such a big motor was a reduction in weight throughout the car. The power to weight ratio is much improved on this new model Viper.

I can’t wait to see this baby out on the track where it belongs…

Hehehehe!!! LOVE IT!

You guys beat on Viper all you like. I haven't ever had a guy who was begging for a ride in my car get in (on the rare occaision that I grant a ride) and then get out after the ride and poo poo the car.

Most of them have big smiles and two of them stroked checks for the 2008 Viper for full sticker price to my husband in 2007. They drove an hour to get to ride in my car and paid up front to preorder for 2008.

You guys can laugh, my car has paid for itself and it is a great ride. I have nothing but love for all sports cars.....but there is nothing out there like the Viper. Love it or hate it, you can't say it doesn't kick ass!

Sometime the old saying that "there is no replacemet for displacement" is true.

I love all sports cars, too, including the Viper, but the quote above is equally as gratuitous as saying "there's nothing out there like the Submariner".

Okay so what is wrong with that? There is NOTHING out there like the Submariner.........

Certain brands can not be reproduced or immitated so that people would buy that Seiko (for instance) versus buying a Submariner.

Some people might like a Seiko, they make great watches, but having a Seiko isn't the same as having a Rolex.

So having a Viper, for someone who loves Vipers, is not like having a Honda Civic....

Why do people have to make the car sound like a piece of crap? Probably because they either have no idea what they are talking about, they are jealous, or they just like something else.

My neighbor just spent 126K on a Fiskar......I just said congrats!!! It isn't my problem that I think she traded her Corvette Grandsport for a POS like a Fiskar. You can still be nice and say "There isn't anything out there like a Fiskar" which is ALSO true!!!!

Cmon guys we all have different tastes which is why the world gives us so much choice. Life would be pretty boring if we all wore the same watches and drove the same cars. How the Viper does the fast thing is will always be open to debate, but one thing which isnt in question is its ability to spank most motors in a straight line.
I spent a day testing an AMG Mercedes SLS at Brooklands 2 weekends ago and that car would also be considered a sledgehammer rather than a precision tool by european standards. But I still had a big grin on my face when I climbed out.
Horses for courses.

As transio mentioned the Enzo is a bad choice for comparison.
Not to mention that I didnt say European styling is subtle or make any comparison between the two. That nets far too broad for me to cast.

There's a fair amount of superfluous not functional lines on that car especially when your comparing it to the more "honest" design of the previous model.

I think the problem here is word choice. The word "like" has a specific meaning, and the way you are using it sounds gratuitous. A Sub is a high-end mechanical dive watch. An Omega Seamaster or a Grand Seiko Diver is "like" a Submariner. A Viper is a light-weight, high-displacement, torquey sports car. A Z06 is "like" a Viper (yes, I've driven both).

Maybe you meant to use the expression "exactly like", which has a different meaning, which I would agree with.

I don't think people think it's a piece of crap. I certainly don't. I think people overstate their case against the Viper because Viper-lovers overstate its awesomeness (e.g. by saying it's a one-of-a-kind vehicle and there's nothing in the world like it). Let's be honest. It's not the greatest sports car ever conceived. It's not intended to be. Don't try to make it something it's not. It's a Submariner, not a Sky-Moon Tourbillon.

Now compare the last-gen Viper to this current one, and you'll see how they went from a subtle, timeless (very "Euro") design to an extremely over-styled turd.

America isn't the only company guilty of this. Lamborghini did it to the New Gallardo and "Aventador" (Murcielago), the last gen of which were perfect. Mercedes did it with its latest series of turds. BMW's been all over the place lately. So I guess you can't say it's a purely American problem, though traditionally, that's been the case.

well, sure, it's aerodynamic and the engine is where it is for handling (like so many other sports cars), but, also, in my eyes, it's ugly as sin and looked dated the second it rolled off the assembly line.

i tend to look at each car on its own merits instead of generalizing "american this" and "euro that", but, hey, if it helps make things easier for you, by all means, over-generalize.

anywho, OP likes the viper, he posted a pic, he's excited, and i don't think it's the place to bash it.

Did you not read my entire post? Nothing about it supports what you just said. I actually agreed with you about the "American" / "Euro" distinction, and only disagreed that the Enzo illustrates your point. You're the one who clustered the Enzo and Aventador together by region, even though they are polar opposites in design philosophy.

Yeah, on that topic... I love the Viper, too. I have the right to express my opinion that Dodge mucked up the design in this new version and my disappointment in them.

That opinion is not remotely the same thing as "bashing" the OP.

Anywho, this is a discussion forum... If the OP didn't want discussion, he would have likely posted his opinion elsewhere.

Doesn't matter what the new model is there is always a ton of people that say the design has been messed up. Just look at ll the haters of the new SubC when it was released. They are still selling very well. I bet the se will happen with the ND SubC. I bet the new viper will sell for wayyy over sticker for 6-12 months. I have no issues with European cars. I love Ferraris and Lambos. That said ill keep our American cars that don't cost a YG Rolex for an avg service. Before I settled on my Vette I looked at a 5 yr old Ferrari 360 and a Porsche TT. I looked at a normal Carrera 997 but ruled it out quickly because of its power (or lack there of.) There is a reason Ferraris(and to a degree Porsches) are loved like they are. But being under 30 it's wasn't the car for me. Services are way too expensive. That said I'm on the 2nd engine in my corvette and have as much in my second engine as the car is worth. Still I can take it to a normal mechanic or do the work myself. It doesn't have the wow factor or is refined but I didnt buy it for anyone but me. I know people that are mustang and viper fans feel the same way.

To be fair, I think most cars designed in the last 5 years have been a hot mess. That includes both the new Lamborghinis, all the Mercedes models with the SLS headlights (except the SLS), Nissan/Infiniti's whole lineup, the newest Mustang, and on and on. That's just how it goes. Sometimes they get it right, and sometimes they miss the "marque" (har har).

No a Z06 is not like a Viper and (YES, I OWN BOTH).

They are like apples and oranges, people ask me about the difference all the time. I also have a very good friend that also owns both, plus he has a ZR1.

Neither of us find the cars to be similar at all. They have a very different power curve and attitude.

The Mclaren mp124c has been the only recent memorable winner from the past few years of releases.

I love how we non americans love bashing your home grown product. Which in some cases like the vette and viper are fun and quick cars. We aussies even gave you a nice base for the new Camaro, and the entire GTO (not that it was meant to look like the original, I think that point was lost).

In any case here are some of the best, designs in recent times:

Let me be totally honest the Pontiac Aztek is without doubt the ugliest car EVER put on the road. Not even an eight year old with crayons could match that.

I'd probably be more generous to Chrysler if I hadn't been one of the people they screwed with the Crossfire, I had a two year old car that the dealership could not supply the majority of the necessary parts for (like the grill, and front bumper which were so damage prone that there was a waiting list on replacements from Chrysler Australia several months long).

Chrysler made a point of blaming Mercedes at every possible opportunity, but the fact was the MB parts were available and plentiful (not to mention cheap) it was the Crossfire specific bits that were fragile and impossible to replace.

Clearly they put more effort into the Viper being a halo car and all, but its the same people tbh and I'd never go near them as long as I live.
