For me the grail brand is Kari Voutilainen.
Amazing hand finishing, a wonderful dial aesthetic and most importantly a commitment to chronometry, not just making bits of metal shiny like many supposed haute horlogerie firms.

PP=ALS > AP= VC.
OK... so maybe I'm just rationalizing but PP's price hikes for "entry" Calatrava are atrocious. They really want to price people like me out, then fine , I'd rather pay less less for a greater degree of hand finishing on an ALS Saxonia. Its styling is restrained, but elegant, and still masculine. From what I understand the degree of hand decorating on the movement exceeds that on a "base" Patek. Thin roman numerals and hobnail bezel on the 5119 just don't do it for me. Kind of feminine. My attainable grail would be an ALS Saxonia in WG, time only. Call me a gauche Panerai strap whore, but I would try to get a brown croc strap as well, to allow for a little versatility. May be some say that there is only one Patek, yada yada, but most people on the street wouldn't know a Patek from ALS anyway. |

Top brands for me:
AP: I have a ROC and want a ROO Panda JLC: I have an MCC1 and don't necessarily want another PP: would love to own a Nautilus one day Rolex: have a couple and don't think I'll be adding any more VC: would like one one day - probably an overseas, but not sure I'll get one IWC: have a couple and have kind of fallen out of love with the brand, although still really like the Portuguese 7-day Auto and wouldn't mind owning one True grail: Richard Mille. My goal is to own one of these! One day I hope! |
