Question RE: GMT II-C

First, I want to say Hi to everybody, I've been lurking around this site for more than a year but never posted. I have a small collection of Rolexes (TT Sub, DJ, DD and Panerais (237,111,232); and after seeing all the pics of the New GMT on this site, I called my AD and ordered one.

I took possession of my new SS GMT II-C last Wednesday and noticed something the next day, it annoys me but I'm hoping that it's just normal and it's not just my watch.

Looks like the 12 o'clock platinum filled marker on the bezel is messing with my eyes, I can see a darker shade of gray sometimes as if it's wet. But if I look at it under the sun it's not really noticeable.

Here's a Pic from Ronnie's post that I took the liberty of borrowing (Thanks Ronnie!!, hope you don't mind) to easily describe what I'm talking about:

Thanks for looking and I'm looking froward to reading your valuable opinions. BTW, I love my SS GMT !!!

Hello there Oliver and welcome to the forum! Glad to have you aboard.

I would be bothered by that as well. I cant tell from the picture but I am guessing that it can be removed by taking the watch to your AD and having them perform an ultrasonic cleaning or a steam cleaning on the watch.

Glad to hear you enjoy the new GMT!!

Welcome o. I have I think had the exact same experience as you a couple of times now.
In my case it was just dirt.
What I did was get a soft bristle 1" paintbrush.
Put your watch under a warm tap, then pour on some liquid mild detergent (say dishwashing liquid).
With the paintbrush go all over to create a lot of suds. The bristles of the paint brush are fine enough to get into all the little nooks and crannies, like the indent markers on the bezel insert.
Next rinse under the tap to ensure that you wash off all the soap.
Your watch should look like new. Then I use some tissues to dry off carefully and your done. Good Luck.

Thanks for the quick reply!! It doesn't look like it's dirty though, it especially shows up when I touch the part that I stated above, and Ronnie's GMT's pic that I posted above seems to have the same exact dark gray shade that I was talking baout.

You're welcome o. The problem seems to arise when people be they AD's or friends handle your watch. A friend pointed it out to me at first instance, and I was worried. However, a quick wash and all was good again. I don't know if Rolex still says in their instruction booklets the washing process for owners every so often, but they used to publish it in one of their user manuals.
Many guys use a soft toothbrush, but that is still to tough for me. I like the paintbrush, and with that you can get into the links of the bracelet etc. It feels great when you have a clean bracelet on your wrist. Just regular wearing causes the watch to come into contact with perspiration etc.

Hello O! I have succesfully used a dry electric toothbrush to get rid of stuburn dirt on my watches. The bristle is soft and it won't hurt your watch. If it doesn't work soak the brush with warm water and try again. I hope it works.

No problem with the photo O. I haven't washed the watch since I got it. I'm ashamed to say I still have the protective stickers on the watch and I would imagine they would peel off if I washed the watch. My Green Arrow is picking up a distinct odor!!

So you guys think that it's just some dirt or grime? I hope too...I never thought about it since I saw it the next day when I got it.
I will give it a nice wash when I get home tonight.

Thanks Guys!!! Any GTG around SoCal anytime soon?

OK, OK. You guilted me into cleaning the Bezel's triangle. Here is the just washed photo. I only brushed the triangle, not the rest of the watch. Still trying to keep the protective plastic on as long as possible.

Geez, you guys are a tough bunch...and don't get on me for the damned lint!

This photo kind of shows how the ceramic bezel changes from a chrome to black too. It kind of hypnotizes you. I have to use all my willpower to keep from staring at it while driving!

Uh, Ronnie, you got a piece of lint on the bezel. Mars the finish a bit.

Ok, ok, I won't mention the lint, but, there are 4 white dots near the 2 O'clock position.

A soft toothbrush with mild hand soap and warm water cleans just about anything off my ceramic!! And that includes smudges on the white gold in the triangle. I think the WG is like a fine pebble finish which really traps the dirt - and water. That's why it can seem as if a simple rinse isn't cleaning it.

I wash my SD every day. In the shower. Without the wrapper. It's as clean as a freshly diapered baby's bottom.

Ronnie, take off that wrapper and get in the shower, for God's sake's man!

And that goes for you, too, Oliver!

I see you took a pic of it with a LEICA!

Amazing bezel! Even reflected the (excellent!) brand of your camera!

I can only add a BIG welcome to our new member, and I am happy to see that this "issue" was nothing serious and could be removed by simply washing the watch!

Yes Bo, the lens is a Leica. Its on a Panasonic compact camera. Its a compact but it has a 10x zoom. Great for everyday shooting with good macro capabilities. I'm surprised how good it is. It was about $300 US.

The ceramic bezel is so shiney that I have to remember to wear clothes when I shoot photos of it. You never know when I'll miss the reflection before posting!!!

I also have the new GMT SS... some soap and an electric toothbrush does the trick... I use it on all my watches.

And (before you ask) the polished centre links can be kept in prestine condition using Cape Cod Metal Polishing Cloth and a Q-Tip

Enjoy watch, I love mine
