Missing a digit of the serial number

Is it all right to buy a vintage Rolex watch (DD in white gold) with the serial number, between a pair of lugs, missing the first digit - ? XXX XXX.

The missing digit is caused by a depression.

If ever the watch is to be sent to RSC for a service, will they take it in?

I would not buy any Rolex with a missing serial. It's an issue. I sent an 1803 I had a while back, Rolex wanted to replace the case!

Rolex will not "take in" an authentic watch. It is called theft. Rolex does not own your watch, but they can refuse to work on it. In that case find one of many excellent and reputable watch makers around the world.

As far as buying the watch; if you are satisfied it is authentic, its not that hard to identify the first digit and establish your serial # by studying the model # and what years it was manufactured. The experts here will be of great assistance with that.
