I think Mr TS's are a bit short...... may get you a few strange looks and not just the fairer sex admiring you from a far....... or not so far....

But I must admit I do hate these long baggy shapeless style shorts around these days..... almost a one size fits all look......

I recently picked up a few pairs of Ralph Lauren shorts. Really good quality heavy cotton and a bit longer than Tom's shorty shorts (sort of mid thigh).

How did you end up in Japan?

Did the audition include shuffling papers and eating doughnuts?

I agree, though perhaps for a different reason. My legs are disproportionately short compared to my torso. Shorter shorts give the illusion that I'm more proportionate. Longer ones accentuates my lack of proportions.

Retired. Had studied Japanese in college. Bored spitless after retiring. Have trouble walking but I can swim so I did didly lying on the beach and going for ocean swims for about 9 months. Sounds like paradise right? I was bored silly and figured I was still young. So I found a job in Japan having always wanted to live here and well here I am.

My favorite are Columbia. Lots of different styles and most have cell phone pockets. Several different lengths. Only complaint is that most have snaps instead of buttons.

Wait a minute, don't they wear shorter shorts in Japan? I would imagine that the Japanese, with their short-legs-long-torso proportions, would stay away from long, saggy shorts.

+1 AFTCO shorts. I'm not sure that I own any other brand.

Try golfing shorts as stated above. If they are of "club" style then they must be above the knee. Where i golf your not allowed to wear shorts below the knee. Makes sense for movement and stuff but good luck. Also for a casual look check out Lacoste. They have very nice stuff

try abercrombie plain khaki shorts. they are baggy and have big pockets. downside is they are VERY casual, but i like them for the beach.

if you're going a little nicer, the golf short is a good way to go.
