Being seasoned visitors to the USA we tipped 20% in all restaurants visited but it we did notice the server's disappointment in their eyes when they heard our British accents.
In the UK 10% is the norm. When I take my wife and two children out at home the meal tends to come to £80-90 and we're there for two hours max. I tip £10 cash and the server is always pleasantly surprised. One time I was out with a small group of work associates two of whom decided to outpeacock each other, drinking £1200 worth of VSOP and uuber expensive Port. I paid the tip, but only for the food and real world drink. Still a £50 tip though. It was worth it to see these two aholes faces the following morning when they were sober and broke. |

What about takeout? I don't tip when I pick up a carryout. However, I sometimes feel uneasy because there is a line on the credit card receipt for tipping, and I'm not sure what the norm is. Do you guys ever tip on a takeout?

Restaurants, even in Finland. (Tipping isn't common)
Europe 10%, US 10-20%. Hotels, a few times, in hotels where the service is great, let's say the person checking you in actually takes you up to your room. Maybe 20 euro... Doormen at hotels, always. A few bucks per luggage. Taxis, 5-10%. Bar doormen, never. Bars, Finland, never. EU, 10%. US, 10% or a $ per beer. What else is there.... The AD?
