Do You Think Resale Value is that Important when Choosing a Watch?
Guys,
Do you think re-sale value is that important when choosing a watch? "Yes" or "No" I would choose "Yes"....I would like to have a watch that pleases me but still can be useful during "rainy days"...:)

Well it would be nice to know you can get some money from your watch if you would need it, so yes. But its far from the most important aspect for me.

getting a deal i am happy with is important, yes. in that sense, not paying above retail and getting a discount when there "should" be a discount (either based on the type of metal or brand) is important in case i'll need to re-sell later. however, re-sale value for the sake of re-sale value? no.

I would not buy a watch if I thought I was going to sell it, to me its a purchase for something I really like and want. If I started considering a resale value I would would be compromised in my choice.
I have been lucky in the fact that all of my watches have either held or increased their value but as I have no intention of selling this does not matter. In fact its something I don't like about the collecting aspect of this hobby, the dollar value seems to out weigh and have an influence on what watch to buy, especially in Rolex circles. |

But .... no.

It's most definitely not why I would choose a watch over another since I never (fingers crossed) intend to sell any of mine..... so just how I feel about it, the quality, history of the brand and the look that's important to me.
However, having said that, nobody likes the idea of any new purchase being worth significantly less the moment you leave the store which is why I have been put off buying cars. With certain brands there is always high pre-owned demand and they say owning a Rolex is the nearest thing to holding cash of any watch brand and you can apparently (so I've been told) turn a Rolex into cash within 20 minutes of arriving in any major city in the world....... They clearly didn't say how much cash and I'm sure TRF is the way to go for both buying and selling pre-owned........ |

It's not important, as I don't buy to sell. It is a nice bonus though, as it can help "justify" as purchase (if you ever need to)....

This is actually a good question, albeit one that has been asked one way or another many times on this forum. I think if a watch really sings to me, I'd buy it even if I knew I would never get my money back if I ever had to sell it.
I think the fact (or at least historical trend) that Rolex watches hold their value over the years is a fringe benefit of ownership but is not and should not be one of your primary buying decisions. That said, it is nice to know that if anything ever happened to me, my wife could "cash-in" my watches rather easily.

I used to wonder why people fixated so much on resale value. You haven't even bought it yet, and you're thinking about selling it?
But eventually I figured out that, as stated above, it's a response to "you spent that much on a watch???" (Not necessarily coming from another person, either.)

Yes--buy them right again!
Why overpay if you don't have to--get the best deal you can.

Yes, oh yes
But its relative If you have a lot of expendable income, then who cares. BUT if you are like most of us and have to save and save to fund your addiction then knowing you can flip it if you have to, or that it should appreciate, takes a lot of weight off of your shoulders when you are shelling out 2-8k for a watch, because at the end of the day.......it is a watch. |

For me, Resale value is part of the decision process when buying an expensive watch.
A Rolex watch is something that I "want", not something that I "need." |

It's quite strange, I've got almost 100% choosing "yes" for the same poll that I put in non-Rolex forum.....

So far I have kept all my watches and don't plan to ever sell them. Having said that you never know what curve balls life may throw at you and there may be a time I need to sell them for whatever reason so knowing they hold their value to an extent is a nice perk.
