Well, for me (not long really) I saved for a couple years to get a Rolex 16610. And it took me a year to finally pull the trigger. I couldn't believe that I was going to $5,000 on a watch. It was so hard to do, but once I did...it was all over. Going in, I thought I'd just buy one watch and be done. I've never stuck with a hobby for so long.
I then began eyeing my next watch. I was thinking white face to vary for my 16610. So I went to AD with full intention of getting a white expy II. I tried it on and was disappointed. Just didn't sing. Now at the time the 116710ln's were still in demand and my AD came out with one from the back. I always research my high dollar purchases, but I didn't. Big mistake as I ended up flipping the IIc. Only watch I have sold to date. At the same on that trip, my AD knew I wanted a white face and MADE me try on a Panerai 51. I knew about Panerai and thought they looked a little cartoonish. I didn't want to even try it on. I did and was blown away. It just worked, but I was very nervous about about spending that much coin on a watch I had no idea about. So, that is how I started with Panerai, but walked out with a IIc instead. But I'm really glad I didn't get the 51 as the resale on those is tough, so I guess I lucked out. So, months later, I plunked down on a 111....then a 210.....then flipped my IIc for a 190.....then got the call for a 390... Then I had lunch with a fellow WIS and found Vintage!!!!!!! Both Panerai and Rolex. OMG!!!!!! So nice, but sooooooooo much money I don't have a vintage yet as the ones I really want are out of my price range, but a brown dialed vintage Rolex GMT and/or sub would be incredible. So much to love. So, I stared out as a Rolex fanboy because I knew nothing better about watches, thought I hated Panerai and now I have one Rolex and 4 Panerai, lusting after vintage of either. Don't think I'll ever want a modern Rolex again (ceramic), which is what got me into this hobby! All that said, I love my 16610, but my Panerai's are just so much fun for me right now.

Well I evolved from a Casio to a Movado, then fell in absolute love with Rolex. I don't ever see myself going more high end than that.

I've been through a number of other brands including Panerai but I always seem to drift back to Rolex as my "core" brand. To me they just look the best on, and give the best feeling. I still dabble in some other brands, but accept I always have to have a Rolex comfort zone!

I started much the same as everyone else. Bought a Rolex, then multiple Rolexes. Next branched out to other brands. What's really impacted my tastes is watchmaking. I decided to learn about the technical aspect of watches and it's changed how I see watches. I'm much more clinical about my watch selections and have really downsized what I had (it's still bigger than I'd like).

I first bought a stainless Date in 80 wanting a tt or YG DD but not being able to afford it. As time and career progressed I moved to the TT Datejust and then to the yellow gold Day Date. I wore the Day Date from about 94 till about 2007 or 2008 as I gradually tired of gold and the status (so I thought) of the DD. When the green Milgauss came out, I bought one and liked it but my oldest son loved it so he got it. I then tried a TT GMT and TT Daytona and liked neither. TT just wasn't for me anymore. I traded the TT GMT and TT Daytona for a yellow gold GMT II C and I really like it but anymore the all gold is just to "showy" when so many people I work with are having such a hard time. I have moved to a 5513 and a 116520 for daily wear. Less noticable to the public but I know what I have. Sothis is how I have changed. I have gone in my mind from my watch stating I am successful in my career to wanting stealth but till wear a nice Rolex. I used to like the wow of the all gold watches but have grown self conscious about wearing such an expensive watch now when I daily deal with people just trying to keep the lights on. I never see myself with another TT as it seems like a pretender and not a contender for me now. I don't mean to offend anyone who loves TT but after 30 plus years of Rolex my tastes have definitely changed. I do like wearing my gold GMT II C but am much more self conscious of where I wear it now whereas in the past I didn't give a flip. I guess with age and experience comes some discretion. I have evolved.

My core is still my core. TAG Heuer 2000 daily wear/world traveller. Omega Constellation for dress and court. Omega Speedmaster is my chrono (hey, if its good enough for NASA...).
And soon, I hope, either GMT or DJ. And then I am pretty much done. Though I do have a fondness for the Cartier Tank. I mean, if its good enough for (the original) Thomas Crowne..... and maybe to honor Senna I should find a TAG Heuer S/EL chrono on a strap. and speaking of McQueen, I do like the TAG Heuer Monaco And of course, if I am going to pass these on to kiddo one day, I can't forget.... oh nevermind. |

I used to only want a TT DJ. Now that I have a few in my collection, I'm toying with the idea of flipping it.

That is interesting. How has that changed your opinion? You have/had a quite diverse collection of high end watches if I'm not mistaken.
