Explorer I vs Milgauss
Hi all, new to the forum and am looking to get my first Rolex. I just graduated from college and will be working in a dressy business environment (suits, ties, etc). I tried on both (at an AD, of course) the explorer I (don't like the II as much) and the milgauss (with the black face) and like them both quite a bit. price difference is not a factor for either watch and it doesn't have to be new either.
My questions is does anyone own either of these and which one would you recommend for the environment i will be going into. I plan on wearing this everyday so one that can dress up and down is much preferred! Thanks everyone. |

The Explorer is a sport watch design and not a good match for dress up wear.
Milgauss is a better fit for a dressy environment. Quote:

I think they're both quite versatile. That being said, considering the difference in brushed vs. polished, did one not stand out to you more?

Both have their merits. The Exp1 is more discreet while the Milgauss with the polished case and center links will be more eye catching.

on spec, the milgauss can do everything that the explorer can do.
but not the other way around. and you can to decide which one looks better to you

exp 1, both casual and classy if needs be, the mil with the lightening bolt is a little to fun for all occasions me thinks, enjoy the dilemma

Congrats on graduating and the job.
Who knows where life will take you, you may end up wanting a gmt function. Take another look at the expii. Just my opinion and thoughts, of course.

What's your industry? I'd say the Explorer I is the more conservative of the two, Milgauss bolder and more expressive. I'd lean more toward the Milgauss with the green crystal, unless you think it'd be too showy for your environment (e.g., conservative bank or law firm).

IMHO they are pretty similar. I like them both. Personally with a suit and tie everyday I'd get something on a strap. I think the DJ or DJII is the best option Rolex makes for daily suit wear. Have you really thought about not having a date? A no date watch bothers me except on the weekend when I don't need the date. I know many on here don't care but it's just one of the things I prefer in a watch. Of the two I'd probably go Milgaus but the orange might get old as an only watch and the Exp is too sporty but it's all about what YOU like. Keep us posted

i've had both. the millie feels more substantial and is flashier with more face colors and the pcl's but the 39mm exp is more iconic and understated imo. the fliplock on the exp is a better clasp too.

I favor the Explorer, but have nothing bad to say about a Milguass.
I would say the right work watch, either on a strap or steel, should be somewhat understated, and not in your face. (So I would suggest a DJ 36mm along with those you have mentioned). Just don't go get Yachtmaster or the Expy II in a moment of weakness! Great watches, but those can come later.

Why would you consider the ExpI if you didn't like it very much? Am I missing something? No one in your office will care about your watch; they'll care about your productivity. Get the model you like most.

I find Explorer's and DJ's to be the best all around watch for work and play, then add to your collection over time with something new that you desire... My dad and uncles wear their dj's while doing everything (from hunting to the board room).

Owned both multiple times. The Explorer is the 36mm for me not the new 39mm, and owned the green GV Milgauss. I now strongly prefer the subtle EXP.

My vote as well, although I'm strongly considering selling my 36 mm Exp 1 for a Datejust. You just can't go wrong with a Datejust, a true do it all watch. |
