Rolex #3 Luxury Brand
Not sure how seriously I can take a survey that spells "brands" with a 'z' but this one ranked Rolex #3 behind Louis Vuitton and Hermes (pg 70):

I really don't give a sh$t about rankings or ratings.
I like Rolex so I buy them. End of story.

It's those bangles and leather bracelets that Hermes is selling. Women are buying them up like they are going to stop producing them. The LV luggage is a big seller too (The men's briefcases are actually beautiful too...).

Actually surprised Apple didn't top the list.

Interesting rankings, though no big surprise to see Rolex moving up. They are very very good at marketing. Believe it or not, there are whole websites dedicated to Rolex, where afficianados gather to discuss and debate the merits of their favorite watch brand and show off their latest acquisitions. Also no suprise that the surveys show consumer interest in buying luxury goods up for 2011 in India and China, but down most other places around the world. Guess where the focus will be for these companies for the next decade or so?

I wouldn't touch anything that had an LV on it. So that pretty much sums up my thoughts on their rankings.

Anyways, I certainly think Rolex is the most valuable watch brand if they rank watches separately. |

There's always a lot of talk here of Rolex's marketing and I do know for a fact know that it does exist, because even I, the media recluse, see the logo here and there and associated with high class things and activities.
There is not doubt that marketing and advertising are key to selling anything and that there is a somewhat predictable ratio between marketing and sales, although some objective studies have shown that that ratio is not as high as it was once thought to be, based on anecdotal evidence alone. But somewhere in some of these discussions the fact of quality seems to take a backseat to methods and quality of marketing. Rolex could not sell the number of watches that they sell based on word of mouth alone, but there can be no doubt that many Rolex watches are indeed sold on the basis of word of mouth or its equivalent on the internet via these boards and elsewhere. Nonetheless, the effect of word of mouth does have an inherent "extinguishing" factor, especially when any given competitor with sufficient resources can flood the media with their name and message. Rolex to my knowledge has never relied on flooding the media, but it has always shown a knack for putting the name in the right places at the right times. And it is that knack combined with innumerable personal testimonies of those who've owned and loved their Rolex watches for generations. I don't know a damn thing about Hermes or Louis Vuitton and where they might have been a hundred years ago nor do I have any idea where they might be in a hundred years from now, but when it comes to Rolex, I can find documentation of their products and reputation a hundred years ago and I can without fudging too much predict on the basis of their demonstrated business acumen that they will be selling watches one hundred years from now. Marketing alone cannot render such a history or a record of financial stability and growth and I would aver that the long road of history is littered with more well-marketed junk than with less well-marketed goods.

You're right, I was remembering the former Gucci-LVMH association. (LVMH is also making incursions into Hermes at the moment.)

Grady I'm not going to quote you but dead on. The issue I have with most of these "rankings" is they don't say how they come up with them or how the brands are scored. If polls many don't say anything about the subjects polled or anything else. IMHO I don't buy the things I like for anything but myself and fiancé and think most of these are garbage. Most of these lists I've seen are UK. I girds USA doesn't care.

Interesting. I also remember this year Hublot sponsoring the Miami Heat. I wonder if other brands might follow this to up there image. Also with LVMH owning Tag, Zenith will they share info? Similar to how GM and Ford share there info on their cars with there brands under each said company. Maybe these brands will become hybrids of one another???

Thank you for your assessment and also thank you for not quoting my entire diatribe.
It just wastes server space and makes the threads too long.

These large luxury companies (Richemont, LVMH, Swatch Group) are really holding companies. There isn't a lot of shared resources but I'm sure they do share some things. |

The City that is the default universal epicentre of flash and bling has found its perfect mate, IMO.
