My new (preowned) Rolex!

My father owned this watch for about 20 years. He's not a huge watch guy and hardly put it to use so he gave it to me recently. Since I'm very new to the brand I would like as much info about the watch as possible. I have been doing some research but it seems impossible to find data on this model (maybe to old? or maybe because I don't know the name of the model). The only thing I really know is it was a hefty sum when purchased .

Congratulations. I'm no expert but you've got a gold Daydate that is quite expensive. The model number and serial numbers are between the lugs, and you'll have to remove the bracelet to read them. The serial number will allow you to date the watch.

The pics are not the best but the watch is not gold, Its platinum (I'm pretty sure) would it just be called a "platinum daydate" in that case? Also are there any tutorials on how to removed the band?

If the watch was "hardly put to use" then I wonder why the bracelet looks so stretched?

I have other questions as well but I`ll wait for now and see what happens before I wade in with an opinion.

It was kept in a jewelry box that was inside a drawer . The other things in the box were getting used, Rings / Chains / Bands. I can only assume thats what scratched the band and face. The face has a few scratches but you cannot see it very well on the pictures.

Edit: Also now and then over the past 20 years my father did wear it. He always wears gold bracelets so im guessing that added to some of the scratches. But really the scratches are not that important to me. I assume that only affects resale. I dont plan on selling something that has been in my family for 20 years. I just want to find out some information about it.

Why is it difficult to find information on a DayDate? That is Rolex's signature watch. I always find it sketchy when someone with only a few posts posts pictures of a watch and wants a valuation.

Take to a nice big jewelery store and pay for them to authenticate it. While they open the case take pictures of it.
And jot down the serial numbers and model number in between the lugs.
And then post them to here.

Ok this seems to be getting a bit out of hand. Let me answer a few questions.

1. I never asked about the value of the watch. I do not care about such things because like I said above I do not plan on selling it.

2. I knew it was a daydate, I was trying to find out information about this particular watch because there seems to be many different daydates and I have only seen this model mentioned once on an auction site.

3. I have a few posts becuase I found this site while researching about the watch. It seemed like there were many rolex experts here so I made an account thinking it would be the best way to get information.

Congratulations! It is always nice to get something cherished from family. I have my Dad's and Grandfather's pocket watches and would not sell them for anything.

What does your father have to say about the watch, for starters? Also, I wonder how "not a watch guy" somehow has a platinum with diamonds Day-Date. Maybe he has an interesting story to pass along about that.

Sigh. Once again one of the reasons why I rarely frequent this place anymore....it used to be a place where people were welcomed with open arms and newbies with questions were the reason is place grew....now it's automatically a jump on the defensive and interrogate a newbie forum. Super lame! To skyline, what you have is an early platinum day date with diamond dial/bezel on a president style bracelet. It's a beautiful piece and yes it's a bit rare bc platinum was not as popular as the yellow gold in the earlier days ofmthe day date. So you won't see too many like yours :) so cherish it and enjoy it because it's a special piece coming from your dad and was DEFINATELY a rare bird when he purchased it. And from me, welcome to rolex forums! Have a look around and if you have more questions....wait for more members to chime in and ignore the lynch mob.

I have had this same treatment before when I joined TRF.. poor lad is only trying to ask a few questions and a load of people seem to have a problem with that or try and pick holes in his story like hes up to know good.

Cool watch -- definitely a looker! That's not the type of watch I'd rock regularly due to the bling factor, but since you've inherited it you've got more kudos to do so. Have fun with it!

Mate, that's an awesome watch! To know more, you will need the serial number and model number. Take it to a watch smith and have them do it for you, don't risk damaging it if you've not done it before and don't have tools.
Oh, and welcome aboard!

Couldn't agree more! Happened to me too. There's a lot of miserable people on this forum. It can be a very unfriendly place at times.

I would add that that watch is worth a SUBSTANTIAL sum of money and you must make sure it's adequately insured.

A practical suggestion. Not only should you get this authenticated by a Rolex AD, but have it appraised and insure it. Welcome to TZ.

I agree

Skyline, welcome to TRF! Not everyone who joins or posts has read many of the threads here. There are some who drop by with questions and terrible pictures about a watch (usually reported to be from a friend or family member, especially a long lost auntie who recently found a watch in a safe or closet) with requests on value or "what do you think of this?" Many of these posts do not seem legitimate. However, I think many have been too sensitive and immediately accuse posts like yours of having some ill intentions. Have fun here, ignore the negativity!

Stone Him!!

Just kidding, welcome to the Forum and yes, anyone that doesn't have the original box, papers and reciept from luch the day they received the Rolex is treated with ....shall we say skepticism on here - just my opinion.

welcome aboard! enjoy the watch.

-Pete

PS - if this is some type of scam then I take back all the nice things :)
