1959 perhaps?

So I found this forum a few months ago, which led me to my 16610LV purchase a handful of weeks back and I realized this forum is the greatest knowledge base for all things Rolex.

I would like some feedback, discussion, insight, comments, whatever you great people have. My (late) grandfather never went a day without wearing his Rolex, when he passed he left it for me. I have received the box, a replacement crystal, some links, and a small piece of paper inside. Attached are some picture (sorry about the quality). The paper says: "1959 127xxxx (i assume serial number) Register 1, 1501". The band is very stretched, however, this thing keeps time like no other and feels fairly solid for its age. You can tell its been used and around, but the story behind it is my favorite.

Thoughts?

Thanks everyone.

Looks like a early Rolex date, smaller in diameter than the datejust, as this watch is 34mm and the datejust 36mm. Yours has a few traits that I find very unique, the hands are a Dauphine type, and the bezel is a engined turned type, very nice! The box & papers adds about 20% to it's value. Overall a nice watch!

Fully agree and thank you for showing us

What an outstanding piece and the stories that it could tell.................

If you what to double check the reference and serial numbers against the paperwork, just remove the bracelet, which you may wish to replace with something that has less stretch. Of course keeping the old one with the box and papers. And looking between the lugs for the respective numbers.

Regards

Tony

Very special remembrance of your grandfather.

There's a list of Rolex serial numbers by year here:

http://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=54362

The number you found doesn't sound like a1959, would be in the 400XXXish. You can remove the bracelet, and there may be a serial number stamped between the lugs on one side, model number on the other.

Also, may have the quarter and year of production stamped in the inside of the caseback. I59, would be the first quarter of 1959, for example, as below.
