Building a 2-Watch Collection...
Hi guys,
My plan is to trade most of my watches for one watch to go with my YM. Main reason is I hardly use all the other watches anymore since I got the YM, so I plan to get something that I'm hoping will complement the YM and act as backup from time to time. My criteria: 1. Preferably not Rolex or Omega 2. In-house movement 3. Steel bracelet (but looks good in leather/rubber) 4. Predominantly brushed finish 5. Holds value 6. +-$7,500 (new or 2nd hand) So far, I've been looking at Calibre de Cartier with black dial and Panerai PAM 328. Cartier Panerai Any other suggestions? regards, lorsban

Check out JLC's Master Control or Reverso line. A bit dressier watch to complement the YM.

The Panerai is a good idea. I don't like PAMs on a metal bracelet, but very easy to switch to a strap

Yeah, I'm looking at JLC as well. Dressier options except for their diver, which is actually nice looking.

Definitely, the 328 is nice. It's the most classic looking one with a date.

I'd look at Chopard's LUC range, they got quite a few really sexy watches!

I have to say JLC Reverso if you want a bit dressy
or Panerai... Again, not a fan of their bracelets especially the new style but luckily its easy to put on a strap... Still make sure you really want the bracelet before you spend the extra $

Agreed. Definitely have to try on first. Still, I'm generally more of a bracelet guy than a strap guy and if I went with the strap version and later decide I like the bracelet, I'll end up spending a heck of a lot more for the bracelet itself. So, best for me to go bracelet first and just buy straps later, which are a dime a dozen.

Here's another option:
As it stands so far: 1. Calibre de Cartier 2. PAM 328 3. IWC Ingenieur 3227-01 4. JLC Reverso

Nice! But for me to get that, I'd need to let go of the YM as well. Don't think I can do that now. Maybe in the future.

Good thing about Panerai is they retain value about as well as Rolex. Good if I'm going to do a big trade later in the far future (including my YM).

I know, it's a really cool option. The one who got me on to that was actually my wife. She absolutely loves that style for me.
Compared to the other watches though, it's more on the dressy side though, isn't it? It's also the most striking of the bunch, in my opinion. The most low key being the IWC.

I would spend just a little more and get a secondhand PAM 233, or a BP FF Sport if you want a diver.

I really like your thinking. I'm in the same exact boat as you. I bought my Yacht-Master a little over a year and a half ago, as a gift to myself for becoming a father with the intention of passing it onto my son when he's old enough(if he is interested). I'm absolutely obsessed with this watch and have worn it every day on all occassions. It's literally "perfect" for me. With that being said, we are thinking about trying for a second child soon, and I can't think of a better reason to add another great piece to compliment my Yacht-Master :) As much as I'd like to have an array of various high end pieces, I think financially and pratically speaking, I'm better off with 2 (or 3 at absolute tops) great pieces. These timepieces were made to be worn, and I hate the idea of having to choose 1 per day if I had 10 other beauties sitting at home. 2 I can manage, and maybe in another 10-20 years I can add a solid gold piece to top the collection off at 3 total. So I initially was thinking a GMT Master II (non ceramic) was the way to go. I love the idea of being able to swap out the dials to give it different looks, and it certainly works with natos/leather straps. Then I started thinking I should look outside of Rolex, for a more diverse duo. I really like the look of some of the IWC watches, specifically the Portuguese line, Yacht Club Chrono, and Spitfire amongst others. I also like some of the JLC offers (NSA!) but the more I looked into them, the more I noticed they all seem to be more expensive than the Rolexes I'm interested in... which kind of started steering me back to Rolex as the cheaper option (never thought I'd say that). Most recently I've been eyeing the Sea Dweller 4000. I think it may be the perfect compliment to my Yacht-Master. I wanted something I can wear on a Nato/zulu, and it's rugged as can be. It is dark and stealth, while the Yacht-Master is a little dressier and louder. I'm certainly not committed, nor do I plan on getting it right away, but hopefully in the next 6 months or so. I'm still deciding, still looking, and open to suggestions as well. Sorry for the long post with not much of an answer, but I figured since you were in such a similar boat as I (both with Yachts looking for that 1 perfect companion) I'd share my thoughts with you. Keep us posted on what you decide to go with and good luck. |

I really like the idea of YM/Seadweller 4000 combination. I have had both of these for many years and enjoy both very much; they really do complement each other very well. If you can only have 2 watches you could do a lot worse than this pair!! |

Actually, if I were to go Rolex, I'd go for an Exp2 black dial. Like the YM, its what I call a stealth Rolex. Hits all the criteria that I mentioned and it looks great. But I don't want another Rolex. Because if I trade my watches in for an exp, I will have 3 Rolexes. A dj, a ym and an exp2. I want to branch out somewhat. The 3227 is a great watch. Also, consider something from Glashütte Original. They offer a large number of really really nice watches. They're something of a Lange style watch for a JLC price.

I know you said not Rolex or Omega, but I think the perfect complement to your YM would be an Exp. II. Different aesthetics, different functionality. Ticks all of your criteria except for one.

But, again, main reason why I'm looking beyond Rolex is because if I get the Exp2, I will end up with the DJ my dad gave me, the YM and the Exp2 hahaha! I know there's nothing wrong with that, but I just want to branch out a bit and add some variety. Sent from my Transformer Prime TF201 using Tapatalk 2

Ya the Calibre is really nice looking. Unlike the others, I was able to try one on and it looks good on me.
Have to try the others first tho. Sent from my Transformer Prime TF201 using Tapatalk 2
