Engraved Sub :-/
I found a sweet sub that was given to an old employee, and he's looking to sell it. Unfortunately, the case back is engraved by the company logo. Is it possible to get it buffed out? What does this do to the value of the watch?

I don't see why not and if it really bugs you, get another case back. RSC would replace it at service time (mandatory?).

You can either buff it out depending on how deep the engraving is, or just get a new case back. Minimal impact upon value, unless it's a particularly collectable vintage piece

The engraved logo is likely to have a negative impact on resale. Not always, but usually.
You should be able to source a new, or like new, case back and replace the one on there if that's a big concern. If you can get the watch at a good price I would jump on it. |

I would not even mess with it right away. After all, it is in the back of the watch, so you won't even see it.
I would just use it and when it is time for a service, then inquire about pricing, etc. Good luck with the buy and post pics if you get it. |

Engraved casebacks are more common than many think. Rolex has long been a top presentation watch..
The condition of the watch is paramount when thinking of a purchase. An engraving is a personal decision and only limits the market of potential buyers since some may be absolutely against such a purchase.. I have a DIY engraving removal method in the Reference Library. I have purchased a few excellent examples that were engraved at very attractive prices.. https://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=171274

Engraving the caseback does not require a replacement at service time. A possible exception might be the titanium cashback on the SDDS. I'm still planning to get mine done.

This has an anniversary date and the logo. Looks to be a little deep, but may give the ol buffing a try. The price is pretty decent, I may just have to pull the trigger on it. Thanks guys!

I was offered one of those Milsubs in the early 80s whilst at RM Poole by an Armourer (the guys that maintained them I believe) who needed cash for £350....I didn't have the cash and a new 'proper' sub was only about £500 I think.....if only I could turn the clock back!
Back to the case backs, how come Naval Stores (Pusser) didn't strike through the NATO codes prior to sale? Or is this a 'souvenir' watch... ;-) |

That's makes me feel a lot better about it. I think the price is pretty reasonable. I'll let you know if I pull the trigger.

A number of milSubs were disposed of in government surplus auctions and generally sold "intact". The ones with scrubbed backs were more likely "nicked", or civilianised after being decommissioned... |

A great excuse to put a clear caseback on it
