VERY Excited: My first Rolex Officially Certified Chronometer
Hey guys and gals,
After a long wait (in my mind, at least. Patience is hardly my strong suit. ), I finally received my Oyster Perpetual from 1958. My first impression is that it's in much better condition than I had imagined from the less than stellar pics from the seller. The young man, who sold it to me, told me its history. His Grandfather recently passed away, and the family found it in his storage bin. No one in the family had ever seen him wear it, or even knew that Grandpa had a Rolex. They were so surprised, they weren't sure it was real, until taking it to a jeweler for authentication, appraisal, and a complete movement service. It is a 6565, with a 1030 movement, as we had surmised. The engravings between the lugs are surprisingly crisp, the dial and hands completely original. The amount of patina is just perfect. The hour markings are interesting. I don't know what the name is for the shape. The applied crown logo is larger than on my 6694. The case is, what I assume is referred to as a partial bubble back, and has very little pitting or corrosion. I chose this watch for its engine turned bezel, the fact it had just been serviced, and has a two year warranty on the movement, the unusual hour markers and creamy white patinated dial. The second hand is blued steel. I have a 19mm 7835 bracelet with 357 endpieces, enroute from Europe, for it. In the mean time, I put it on a very Rolexy gloss finish Alligator strap, with a period correct generic silver colored buckle. Here she Is: |

I will definitely post more pics when the bracelet arrives. Here's a few more pics taken in natural ambient light:
It's hard to get a photo that reflects a true representation of the awesome condition of this 55 year old watch, but these are close. The dial has a slightly more yellowish creamy hue than my Nikon picked up. I'm very impressed, especially considering what I paid. There is a Jeweler's mark (Job number, perhaps? ) etched into the rear of one of the lugs. Is that normal for the time period? KAT |

Thanks guys. I took a few more pics, that I think show off the dial's creamy color better, and the last one shows a jeweler's engraving on the rear of the bottom left lug.
KAT The only things I needed to do were to give her a light hand polishing, take off the ratty old mesh band, and install a strap and period appropriate SS buckle. I can't wait until the bracelet arrives. It will probably take a few weeks. |

Thanks, Guys. I'm just learning about vintage Rolex, but I have good instincts. I got this from a non-watch guy, who was rather clueless, but did have a full service done, when he found it in his grandfather's things. He posted only two pics, and they weren't the best quality, but I had a feeling it was something special, made a rather low offer, and he accepted it. Turns out he was great to deal with, and I told him when I get the bracelet, and install it, I'll send him a few pics, so that he can see what it must have looked like, when his Grandpa wore it. It's definitely a keeper.
