Year of Birth?

I have never really understood the concept but maybe it because I can never find anything from my YOB 1973 that I like.

Only time I could see the point of it would be if it was for a special anniversary say 21 or 30 where it was bought as a present for someone.

I love having a Sub serial from the year that I graduated High School. It's like a time warp back to prom, varsity sports, parties, and basically great times. When I look at it, it makes me smile

Totally understand the appeal, but I decided on a birth year car instead of watch.

My 14060m was born the same year as my daughter. In fact, it was a gift on her birthday. Hopefully she'll appreciate that when it's her turn to wear it. I am now saving/searching for a 2006 GMT Master to retroactively commemorate my first daughter's birth. Funds were lacking then.

I get the appeal but it's not like my dad or I bought it the year I was born. Now, if you like how it looks... that's entirely different.

My birth year Rolex was confirmed by Rolex themselves in writing. The document is framed in my office. No real reason to have a BY Rolex but it's fun.

My birth year watch would have to be a DJ Rolex didn't start making Subs or GMTs until after I was born. I plan to look for a Sub or GMT for my sons 25th which would be a 1988.

I can't get a birth year wristwatch.......only sundials were made when I was born.

Well with only these Internet charts to go on all any one can do is get a approximation when a case was stamped nothing more.Now this serial don't always mean that was exact year when the watch was made then shipped around the word for sale.

From 1973 I'd get an early AP Royal Oak 5402. Or a GMT 1675

As for the concept of birth year watches, I think it's a great way to own a vintage piece. Although IMHO it's even more fun when the watch is considerably older than the owner. When people ask about my Speedmaster, they hardly believe it's 10 years older than me, and is in much better shape than me

Unless the watch comes with original papers. At least then you can see when it "started living in the wild".

How cool would it be to have one with papers dated the exact same day.... long shot - but the chase is half the fun.

Having a watch which correspond with one's birth year is certainly appealing. I was looking out for a '73 Red Sub, but the thought of ensuring that all its parts are genuine made me decide otherwise. A PAM is out of my reach.

I was fixated on either a Rolex or a PAM because both these brands appeal to me and my mannerism, profession and character allow me to carry off these 2 on the wrists :p

I will continue to harbor thoughts of owning a birth year watch, but indulge myself in watches and other things which are within reach, in terms of funds and commemorative personal events/milestones achieved.

I was for it but after Padi's post my interest has ceased.

Being in my mid 20's I am not really a fan of vintage pieces. I mean I would rather buy a 2012 watch then when I'm 70 I can call it vintage and I'll be vintage with it.

I did do a birth year search and found a lovely gold GMT with jubilee. I may consider buying something like it but only after getting a good amount of modern watch collecting under my belt.

I would of loved it if my Dad bought a watch when I was born and wore it for my life then gave it to me for my 18th birthday or something along those lines. I have no plan to have kids but if an accident happens I'll do something along those lines.

It's irrelevant. A good friend of mine knows she was an accident, she also knows her parents never wanted kids. They ended up getting boy/girl twins. They are probably the closest knit family I know and my friend is closer to her parents especially to her Dad than any other person I know.

In comparison my gf was "a miracle" her parents were desperate for and they tried for two years to have her. Her Dad left to start another family when she was 5 and she fought with her mother constantly until a massive fight erupted over her decision to transfer out of law school and the supposed weight she gained in her first year of university. She doesn't speak to either of them any more.

I wouldn't care if I found out I was an accident and my parents never wanted me. What would matter would be how they acted when they had me. If the second I was born I changed their world and we were very close that would be better than people who want kids but regret it when they actually get them.

Clive to answer your question the appeal for me was to obtain a vintage reference (albeit the only Vintage Rolex reference that made my heart skip a beat) after I have obtained the modern ones that I sought
