Multiple pieces to one grail piece?

Multiple pieces to one grail piece?

Has anyone successfully gone from multiple pieces to one grail piece and not regressed back to multiple pieces. I am sure I am not alone. I look at all of my pieces and realize I could consolidate to one gold or platinum ultimate grail piece. I just have my doubts because variety is the spice of life. However, with multiple pieces comes multiple services, multiple insurance policies, etc. which can become very expense really fast. Plus I can only wear one at a time! I would love to hear from those who have contemplated and done this either successfully or unsuccessfully. Thanks in advance for your replies.

Would you wear that grail every day?

Some day I will consolidate my collection to a "small number" of watches and some beaters so I don't get bore. I've tried it before but when great deals come along you have to pull the trigger.....that's the problem.

I've often asked this same question. I always see people say "Oh, so and so watch is my GRAIL! I would love to get it one day but it is out of my reach!" Then, I look at their signature line and they list a bunch of watches in their collection that, if sold, would more than enable them to attain that grail with the resulting funds.

So, I think most people pick multiple over grail, for the variety. I agree with that. I want a DRSD. I could, conceivably sell my two watches (16600 and 1665) and, with some more savings, pick up a DRSD (or one AMAZING 5508). But, the problem that I always have is that, as I wear my watches, I get attached to them and build memories with them. Within two months of owning them, there is no way I could ever sell them. So, I have to start all over with saving, thus forever putting my DRSD out of reach.

So, I pick multiple over grail (though I only have 2 watches and will likely not acquire another for years, so my idea of "multiple" has to be taken with a grain of salt.)

For me, 4-5 is enough.
Couple of nice ones that I wear frequently, two heir looms that are pretty to look at and wear on special family occasions, and a beater or two for the gym/workouts/hard labour.

I don't think I could be a "one watch guy", merely because I value my grail a little to much to put it through the daily grind....don't get me wrong, I am definitely not a - is it safe to do this and safe to do that while wearing my watch person, but my grail can't be worn while working in the yard, etc.

Earlier this year, I did sell my Yachtmaster and Panerai and put those funds towards my grail. I am satisfied with my 16610lv for daily wear and 116619 for the weekend watch......I still have the sickness and catch myself in the For Sale section too often.

Good question. I would have to go with multiple pieces, unless I already had a decent base collection. For the price of one of my grails -- a 116509 meteorite Daytona or a PP 5396r -- I could have a Rolex Sub or GMT as an everyday wearer, a Panerai 111 to switch it up, a Cartier Tank solo in yellow gold or a JLC Ultra Thin for a dress watch, and still have cash left over. It is hard to give up that versatility for a single watch, IMO.

Variety is the spice of life... Sometimes it's good to admire without desire!

I prefer to have a variety vs. owning a grail watch. This way, I can rotate depending on the situation or mood that I'm in.

I purchased my Daytona in hopes it would satisfy my craving. It lasted successfully about 2 years. Now I find myself seeking more ie the imminent arrival of an Explorer II. This site doesn't help either lol. So much temptation.

I know what my grail is...until then, I have tricked my mind into believing buying a few others to "hold me over" until I can purchase my grail is the best way to go.

Yeah I was going to pare down to one grail piece but I like changing watches.

I say multiples of nice pieces.

Grails never are grails for too long when they are acquired anyways for me!

Good choice! I think even if I had a one watch collection which consisted of something ridiculous I would get bored. Just how I am

I've done this in the past. Imho a good move, as long as the pieces being sold/traded can be easily replaced at a later date, if so desired, and you are getting a good/fair deal. Personally, I don't see the point of buying multiple 'nice' watches which are actually keeping you from your 'grail'. Better to get the grail and then later add other pieces for variety or whatever reason(s)

I would never sell the ones I have to afford a more expensive watch. Better to just save up for the grail. The wait makes the achievement all that sweeter.

i once ran up to 15 or so pieces and only wore 2-3 of them

now down to some NOS vintage Rolexes that make me smile and they get plenty of wrist time

also sold some of my modern Rolexes to plough into Patek which is a whole new world of discovery and enjoyment

if you can find your Grail and need to sell to acquire it - then hell yeah!!! its a grail and if you can find it then go for it... you can always buy more 'beater' or everyday watches after the grail.

imho - if its truly the grail watch, then you'd sell up to get it.....if you'd not sell then maybe its not really that much of a grail, more a 'nicetohave'

Fortunately I did'nt have to sell my long time Submariner and Speedmaster Pro when I purchased my "grail" Daytona, the be all to end all further watch buys.

That lasted all of five months, then I aquired a 2254 followed by a 16610 LV

Since I can't stay off TRF, it's not a question of if, but when my last personal must have, a SD 4000 happens.

Don't go from many to one piece. Go from many to at least 2 pieces, so you will still have options to choose depending on the specific ocassion. Just make sure you pick two pieces that are very different: one sport model all rounder and another for the more dressy ocassions.

Nope. I could've sold my DSSD and SubC for my AP faster (not that I consider it my "grail", but you get the point) but saving for it is honestly much better. I've been wearing my AP at least 5-6 days a week but I've also been wearing my sub. IMHO almost always 2-3>1 if same value.
