Air-King Afficionados... Black, Blue or Silver?
Hi, peeps! :)
Just want to get your opinion on which dial color best suits the king? Black... Blue... Or Silver... Personally, I'm leaning with the silver dial cause it makes the whole watch a lot more simpler considering the very design itself is already simple. Less is more, so to speak. :) What's your preference? :) NOTE: Pictures are not mine and are just attached for visual reference. |

If you're going for the ref 5500, silver. They did make a very nice grey dial but they're rare.

There was an article in GQ or Esquire a few years back and in it the author said something like if you don't own a pair of desert boots and a silver dial AirKing, you'll never be properly dressed.
I liked that line! Sent from my using Tapatalk

The grey dials were mostly seen in the late 60s into the 70s, but with Rolex and the AK anything is possible. I have a resource containing all of the 5500 dials. PM me if you want it.
The 5500 was in production for donkey's years and went through many eras. Most were delivered with oyster bracelets but a few did come from the factory with jubilees. Originally the buyer could specify a jubilee at the time of purchase and the AD could switch it out. Original jubilees are hard to prove anyway so it's kinda moot. The AK was originally intended for pilots navigating using dead reckoning navigation, ie time/distance calculations. That is the reason for the clean, uncluttered dials. I actually use mine for this purpose but it's not really relevant to the 21st century. It's a great alternative to the GMT if you're after a piece of aviation history. Sent from my using Tapatalk

Does anyone share the same view that each dial color somehow looks better with a certain model of the Air-King? Like the silver matches well with the 5500's. The blue or black with the 14000's. And the white ones with the 114200's. Or is it just me? lol

I agree. The white dial on the current AK is the best looking dial in the current lineup.

An Air-King 114200 with white dial. Just to complete the line-up...

Blue or silver both cool. Just try it on your wrist and then you can decide
