Car dilema / what should i do?

As you guys can see if you go back to my first thread, i am a bit indecisive when it comes to spending money. Here is my dilemma, i own a 2011 mercedes e-350 and i have been thinking of trading it in for the new range rover that's coming out. although, i have always loved the fastback mustang and there's a fixer upper i have an opportunity to buy and get it done to my style.

Should i just stay with the 350 and get the mustang? either way i will be spending around the same amount of money. should i just get the range rover? the 350 has been giving me constant problems and its been in the shop twice in the past year alone.

Good question . . .

And with the Range Rover you are not going to be in the garage you think ?

Love them but all my friends have lot's of problems with the Range Rovers.
The Sport diesel version is Europe is the best you can get . . .

Google a little bit . . . .

Good luck

BTW the mustang needs everything, its just the shell with a non working motor. Car looks straight not much rust and had a local mechanic look at it and said it basically needs a full restoration.

We had a Range Rover. The worst car we've ever had! I'd stick with the BMW X5 anyway and have done! The amount of electrical issues the RR had. Wouldn't start, auto headlights wouldn't switch on in the dark, sat nav voice kept going off for no reason, air-con wouldn't turn off! Waste of £59,000

They're ok cars when they work! Bmw being my favourite cars, I'd naturally take the X5, best blend of sporty driving, comfort, luxury and quality!

We'll to be honest I like the Range more than the BMW (sorry ;-) but as mentioned . . . I want a car that runs when I need it.

Currently I have an Audi A6 and never ever had one problem . . . besides the required maintenance of course.

Even my wife's Cooper S never had any problems and now she really want a Range Sport . . . trying to talk me out of it . . ;-)

Need details on the mustang but it sounds like a project/hobby/money pit. Most folks who own them forgive their penchant for costing more than they're worth. You might consider finding one that runs/drives. In the end it will cost less.
The real problem is your daily driver needs to be more reliable. I'd consider Lexus, Infinity for reliability.

i would say if you are hesitating and asking an internet board for thoughts, stay away from the mustang. sounds like a big project that is best seen through when it's done out of love of the hobby and the experience.

just my two cents.

I've had 4 land rovers.. 3 discoveries (before they were titled LR) & now a Range Rover Sport.. great vehicles & never had a single problem with them. I know people seem to really enjoy talking about how much time they spend in the garage & how unreliable they are, but my personal experience has been fantastic... and we will be getting a new RRS in the next couple of months.

As to the OP, the Mustang sounds like a really fun project!

Good luck

Range Rover/ Land Rover are gawdawful unreliable, at least here in the States. I swear they ship their parts surface mail on the QE2....

Just horrible.

And you want one in it's first year of production? Honestly you'd be better off just burying your cash in the back yard.

Odd, you say the Benz is giving you trouble, but you want to take on a garage project of a Mustang?

Totally second that! Range Rover = Garage!
Plus, neither do I think Mercedes is better at that! My dad's Mercs, since the sixties, had issues! (Worth noting, he had the bad habit of picking a mechanic he trusts and sticks to him, coz "garages are thieves" :)) BAD STRATEGY. PROVEN.
TIP: BUY A VOLVO. XC90 is a fantastic car. Haven't tried it myself. But had an S40 T5 (Turbo 219hp). LOVE IT! But want to change it coz I'm tall (182cm 6'1") and need something roomier for a change. But we've always had volvos in our family and boy r they reliable and problem free!

Get the Rover hands down... So many like to go on and on about reliability and issues... I have owned 3 Sports (just picked up a 2013 last week) and very minimal issues overall. I too have had more problems with Mercedes and BMW than Rover.

Rover reliability has improved greatly over the years and I personally wouldn't give it a second thought

Sell the Mercedes. Use some of the cash to buy a CPO MINI Cooper S... It is the most fun daily driver for the money, way cooler to zoom around in than big Mercs. Take the rest of yur cash and do the Mustang. It is a once in a lifetime oppurtunity, and if you don't do it, you'll look back after a few years and regret it, trust me. I have always dreamed of an Aston Martin DB5, and running cars were probably $20,000 - $30,000 with a $100,000 restoration cost. Now, rough cars are selling for almost $500,000...

Avoid the Range Rover. Not a nice driving experience on the tarmac and they usually have issues.

Unless you just absolutely want the challenge of bringing a car back, buying one already done is far cheaper than having it done. If you can do it yourself and want to, that's one thing.

If you just want one, get one already complete.

I can say from experience that Lexus is a great car. I'm on my 3rd LS and love the car. It's nicer to drive than my Phantom.

Lexus...

While I like the Range Rover, I hate the gas mileage. I'd rather not spend $400/month just keeping it full of fuel. Now if they bring the diesel to the states, then that's a different story. Their quality is much better than 10 years ago, but that goes for just about every brand of auto on the road today.

Why do you want to get rid of the E-350? Just not your style, or is it something else? You're gonna take it in the shorts when you trade it...

I'm guessing this fastback Mustang is either a '65 or '66 - the only years worth owning IMO - other than the "Boss" model from around 1970.

Probably the overall best SUV on the road is the current BMW X5 - looks good in and out, and great engine options. The new Q5 with the 3.0 TFSI is a nice ride too - same engine as in my 2011 S4, but de-tuned to around 270HP. MB ML = Bleh, VW Tow-rag is nice but overpriced.

As a guy who owned a 64 1/2 Mustang in my late teens, be prepared for routine upkeep and some occasional aggravation. Probably $25-35K to restore it.

Own a LR and 5 series...LR is a "love it or hate it" ride..in my case, it's neutral. Beemer, very reliable! Mustang over RR...Range Rover is my choice! Hard to come by with vintage parts when it breaks!

The Range Rover is a great choice, if you are the Queen of England, and have three or four vehicles in reserve following you everywhere you go, and full time livery staff to take your vehicles in for a tune-up/service every week.

Seriously though, buy a 2012 or 2013 Jeep Rubicon; it is the funnest SUV I have ever owned.

Someone stops to make a left turn and they didn't leave enough room for you to pass? NP, hop the curb and drive over mud, rocks, stumps, logs, and whatever else is in your way...

Pull the doors off, take the roof off, etc., etc.

Add 100s of different customized parts: bumpers, nets, doors, winches, etc.

They are cheap enough compared to a Range Rover that you can crash it into a rock wall and just buy another one or two... LOL!

Thank you guys for the help. I think i might have to go with restoring the stang on this one. I will need to cough up $65k for the rover SC if i do a trade-in on my MB.

I went over the numbers with the shop owner and the total cost of the mustang will be around $30-35k and will be done to my liking. I was looking at cars on eBay that where already restored but for $5-10k more i can have the car how i want it to look.

I was leaning toward the RR this morning, but i still have to wait a couple of months before its even out, so might as well get the mustang and when the RR hits the dealerships ill see what i do.

Love the Jeeps! but i just can't be driving one to work or to eat with clients.

Thanks,
Mr. Krabs
