We all do that right?

I think that food and watches account for more than half of all my camera phone photos!

Anyway... I had the opportunity to do some real food photography last night, a first for me. Never done that before and let me tell you, it wasn't easy!

On a positive note, I got paid in food and drinks so I got to eat or drink everything that I photographed.

I damn near had to be carried home I was so full!

There were certainly a lot more challenges than I anticipated, and just like watches, group shots were an absolute nightmare.

Never really photographed food....I am more of a nature type of photographer. Self taught

My wife does not like to be photographed unless I am in the photo too. I hate being in photos.

I did not prep the food but I did all the "posing", lights, shooting, developing etc.

Those are some some nice shots Chip!

Suggestion - add a cup of miso soup or steamed egg to the shoot. The additional steam will make the photos much more inviting. There is no need to have the soup seen, just the steam will wet the appetite nicely (even a piece of dry ice in the cup will do)

Also, tell the restaurant to invest in rectangular (not square) porcelain plates. Round oval plates seem odd for Japanese food... (and one more thing - tell them not to make the wasabi look like a leave... that's just not right..., better just hide it - wasabi is very difficult to be shaped nicely and that shows the skills of the chef)

I would suggest to have a look at websites of Japanese sushi restaurants in Japan and study how they place the sushi's... e.g. http://www.tsukijisushisay.co.jp/
In there they have got like 50 restaurants all over Japan and under each location's restaurant they have a gallery of the dishes. The food is all nicely placed and really tempting. I was eating at one of their establishments on Sunday (in Osaka) and today (in Kyoto). Fantastic stuff.
Also, recommend checking out Ming Thein's site. He's a professional watch and food photographer http://www.mingthein.com - I learnt from him a lot on the lighting on food photography.

Like I said, this was my first time doing food photography and while I studied quite a bit, I forgot just about everything while I was shooting.

She was really happy with the results, which is good.

Next time, if there is a next time, I will do better.
