1978 Daytona in San Fran

First off, I know, picture or it didn't happen. Except in this case it did happen. My wife and I were on vacation, starting in Disneyland and heading up for a wedding in Sonoma Valley. Along the way we spent some time in San Francisco, where I happened to stumble along a Tourneau where I happened to try on a 1978 Daytona. It was fantastic and a great size, a little small but still perfect. The salesman mentioned to me that he had a new stainless steel daytona in the safe and wanted to know if I wanted to see it. He looked slightly offend when I replied that there were quite a few at the AD's where I live and aren't as big a deal. Anyway, no phone, no camera. If someone in San Fran wants to swing by and take a picture I would be grateful because I wish I could have.

Did you also stop at Shreve on post street? That's one of the nicest, best staffed, stores in San Francisco. I'm sure the salesman at the Tourneau was surprised when you didn't faint at the thought of seeing a real life SS Daytona...

Well, I did say in SF...

I've never been to that dealer in Burlingame - it was a bit of a drive from Oakland/Berkeley. The AD in Berkeley (at the corner of University and San Pablo) was fairly good, though they tended to stock mostly the "loud" styles. The selection of Patek, Lange, IWC, and JLC at Shreve was really top notch last time I was there (maybe 2006).

No, It looked like this actually. It was a great find to just try on. I thought the price they were asking was a little high considering it wasn't an actual newman dial. But if I was all about a Daytona, I would have been in a serious jam as I would not have wanted to leave without it.

No, we just walked around the area our hotel was in. We had to leave the next day for a wedding in Sonoma. The dealer did look offended when I didn't jump at the chance to see the Daytona. I even talked to an AD here when I got back and he said that most ADs are now giving discounts on SS Daytona's again. Not sure why it varies so much country to country.

Wow.

I wish I could say Shreve sales folks were good. Their service guys are awesome...but I have had the worst experiences getting associates to help me...show me a watch or have a conversation about a watch without insulting me.

Yea I saw that one back in June...price was high, but nowhere near where PN's live. Take a look at the PN in Fourtane in Carmel if you want a little shock.
