Hey guys....so Long Island shores are pretty trashed. I'm still without power, but at least no MAJOR damage to my house...I guess I got lucky from what I've seen.

Hey guys checking in from the previous thread, "Night Of Hurricane". Staten Island is still very bad. Only the mid island is in good shape, all the coastal neighbors are just destroyed. Havent seen FEMA or the Redcross once. Locals like myself have been supplying the sheltars with food, clothing, sanitary item. Power is beging to go back on around the island thank god.

Finally have power down in Wall Street. I'm at 60 Broadway and don't know if others have power but if we do I am assuming others around me will too. Unfortunately the moment power came on my boss called me to go into work.....

What a mess. I drove in today from Brooklyn and the whole lower manhattan had no power. I only saw traffic lights working past 33rd st. I am on 35th st, and just a block away on 36th there is no power.

I could barely find a cup of coffee! All stores are closed...

The losses mount daily as more reports come in - sadly the death toll is up to 90 souls as of now. Pray the families can heal and all who lost homes and businesses get relief quickly.

Not sure who has & hasn't seen this & who it may be applicable to, but Gov Cuomo announced that insurance companies should waive the deductible for all insurance claims related to Hurricane Sandy. It was in Todays NY Daily News page 8 far left side. I know people who have called their insurance company & verified it & filed claims with it. For homeowners waiving the 1%-5% deductible for home damage could easily run over 10k, which should be waived. Just trying to help out my fellow TRF members! Hope this helps.

CNN did a story tonight on "the forgotten borough" of Staten Island. It looks like a big disaster there as well. My parents have a house there, but it's on the hill, so I'm sure it is fine. They haven't been out to check on it yet. Could be some trees down.
How's New Dorp? I was just there last week.

How was driving in from Brooklyn? I've been working from home all week, but friends and co-workers have been telling me 2.5-4.5 hours to commute from queens, brooklyn, staten island to midtown Manhattan.

I live in ocean grove new Jersey and we survived rather well considering my house is a block from the boardwalk. I was surprised that there was no flooding in the basement. The pier in ocean grove was swept away and the southern end of the boardwalk was demolished. There was flooding on south side as well. My grandparents in Brighton beach Brooklyn were evacuated to my moms. That neighborhood was devastated cars flipped over some on fire and sand everywhere. Hope people in Staten island are safe that area got hit bad. Stay safe out there.

Judging from the pictures, Sandy seems like a really ironic name for a hurricane.

I doubt that it will be used again, given the severity of this storm.

took Manhattan bridge, got in today in 45 min! It was super smooth.

Going home took about an hour, but all the traffic was near Barclays.

Just don't forget you need 3 ppl to cross the bridge 6am-12am

My thoughts and prayers go out to every one of you. I wish I could do more than send them and a pittly donation. If I could come up there I would. Best to you all for what tiny little it's worth.

Yes they do. Only the names of the worst storms are retired.

There are enough names that they don't recycle them often, but I have seen them recycled in the past.

This is from the NOAA site:
The six lists above are used in rotation and re-cycled every six years, i.e., the 2012 list will be used again in 2018. The only time that there is a change in the list is if a storm is so deadly or costly that the future use of its name on a different storm would be inappropriate for reasons of sensitivity. If that occurs, then at an annual meeting by the WMO committee (called primarily to discuss many other issues) the offending name is stricken from the list and another name is selected to replace it. Several names have been retired since the lists were created. Here is more information [sic] the history of naming tropical cyclones and retired names.

Watching Dateline and the homeless people....Manhattan could easily turn into downtown New Orleans if they don't get some help for the elderly and poor that are without power and living on the brink. There are elderly in high rises that can't get food and water and can't flush toilets.

I can see mass chaos if things don't get under control soon. We lived through it and care for the people that were pulled out of the 9th ward and superdome after Katrina. I worked the local shelter for weeks....

So sad....why couldn't other cities learn from our chaos!!!

Just came back to my house and walked on what's left of the boardwalk in ocean grove. So sad to see my community get hit like this.

My thoughts and prayers are with all of you who have been impacted by Sandy. Unbelievable, the destruction wrought by this storm, and it's continuing effects...though i live in California, I grew up in NYC and it hurts to see my hometown and the affected regions suffering so.

Godspeed...

Nice to have power back, however no heat or hot water still. Luckily, there have been many business helping out. I've been showering at an equinox that is uptown, that I do not belong to. Banks have waved fees etc. AT&T was a big flop, as I had zero service downtown at all, when it seemed those with Verizon were a ok.

The recovery process will take a long time. My prayers and thoughts go out to those harmed by sandy. I hope this nor'easter doesn't hurt the relief effort too much.
