rolex problem due to seldom use

i just read about this thread https://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=232075 which this fellow TRFer is discussing about his seldom worn rolex "dying". my friend also have this problem and has to shell out $300 to fix the problem.

should rolexes be often worn, what about rolexes that spend most of their time in the winder, just like my friend's watch, is this supposed to happen? it's disappointing to hear about this stuff knowing how expensive these watches are.

All mechanical watches will need to be serviced in order for the lubricating oils to be cleaned off and replaced, and any dirt that has accumulated to be removed.

Modern oils are much longer-lasting than oils used in the past, but even so, servicing should still be carried out at regular intervals to ensure movement longevity.

With regards to using a watchwinder, you wouldn't leave a car in the garage for a long period of time and expect it not to need servicing before being run! So I personally would use a watchwinder rather than leave a watch unworn for a long period of time.

If any watch is not worn for say longer than a month just a small wind once a month or so is fine.Myself have done this now on all my unworn watches for over 30 years with out any problems.Myself just cannot see any point in having any watch on a winder 24/7 if its not needed to tell time on the wrist.

Whats the point on putting extra wear on the movement when its not needed to tell the time on the wrist. Its possible with movements like the cal 3135 to be stored at Rolex months, weeks, or even a year plus old before its match to a case.

Unless you have a watch in a million you will still have to adjust the time and the date, even if the watch is on a winder putting unnecessary wear on the movement. If watch is not needed to tell time on the wrist just let it stop and rest, winding and re-setting takes about 30 seconds to do.

use

the worst thing, imho, for any mechanical item from car to watch is lack of use.

Would you leave your car in the garage idling when not using it? I frequently let some of my watches sit for extended periods of time stopped and have seen no ill effects so far.

I respectfully disagree when one is talking about watches. With todays modern synthetic lubricants there is no reason to have a movement running unless the watch is actually being worn.

Perpetual calendars and such are typically kept on winders just to maintain the calendar. Allowing a watch to run completely down will not hurt its performance at all.

The only people REALLY recommending winders are those that manufacture them.

I say with the modern oils simply wind it once a month for a few hours to get 'er all warmed up and don't worry about it.

Just wind it up once a month to keep the oils flowing, oils like a good bernaise sauce are a composite of ingredients you have to keep them stirred so they don't separate. If you ever made Bernaise sauce you know what I'm talking about. This has been cooking with Rikki.
