There's been Rolex hypes before.
I wasn't implying you called me a liar no offence taken or intended.I was just wondering if perhaps had a solid source as opposed to an opinion? I agree 9 out 10 times I get BS from an AD not this one in particular but just about any other AD I speak to I hear some funny stuff.

Well... There's been plenty of Daytonas going around my neck of the woods for about a year, year and a half now.

There's three AD's in Finland. None of them has closed, or lost their AD status, so the Daytona-a-plenty (116520) isn't due to some dealer close down.

The daytona is an awesome watch. But a business is always out to make money. A hype usually renders a fatter pocket. I don't think Rolex has made it a hype, but people very eager to get it combined with AD's seeing an opportunity.

Nothing wrong with that. It's a free market.

Should the secondary market prices soften as many predict, I still think the the 116520 is safe at the £6k / $10k mark for the next few years at least.

One the hype has disappeared and the carpetbaggers are long gone the watch can then be enjoyed as a great watch, available at a decent saving when bought nearly new.

I agree on the hype from ADs I've heard some funny stories first and second hand. The AD closings I think were primarily in the US and maybe a few in Canada ,not that we have many.I recall reading here on TRF it was due to consolidation to a more Boutique (read NO discount) style corporate store business model, much like Omega is undertaking..I forget the chains name but I think I read they were liquidating gold and non sports models and off loading the popular sports models to grey dealers.

I have been to 10+ ADs in Bay Area, CA in last 10 months and some been more than one times. However, Never seem one SS Daytona available in store or display. Only WG or RG available. All said same story... not able to get or order it. They just come 2 or 3 randomaly a year.

Some bay area dealer have told me they usually put it in the window case when they get them but never know when they have them
But ones I visited get several a year and willing/able buyer usually wouldn't need to wait long to get one if they don't already have one in stock.

Tourneau on Market had both a white and a black SS in their safe, last time I was there. I guess it's all who you know, or who you ask.

As some have commented my AD always had one in stock but it never was in the showcase. After my 4th ROLEX purchase when I asked for one -- it appeared.

Congrats on the Daytona. Great gift from the wife indeed!
What did it cost you in turn?

I think all Swiss watches have gone up in prices recently.
Look at omega planet ocean chronograph it's almost £6.5k , so I had the option to buy I would buy a daytona for a grand extra , even tag watches have gone up like mad in price, and the hype of a daytona is created by ourselves not by Rolex .
But it's a very good watch compared to other chronograph Swiss watches

Each ADs experience will vary regarding the number of Daytona's they get in + the timing/frequency. My local ones have said similar things like "we see a couple each year".

But it could be different elsewhere -e.g., in say Las Vegas where they had 4-5 of the SS white dials and over a dozen other dials/metals in the case earlier this year when I visited them.

I have to wonder how many are taken in in by pawn shops with the plastic still intact? Win some money, buy a lucky Rolex.. lose some money " damn Rolex is cursed" sell it to pawn shop and the cycle continues

Well, there has not been plenty Daytonas in second hand market in Finland lately,we both know that, but at the moment, only two in that same shop. The other one is unused and the price is only 50e under AD retail. Three AD:s in Finland, but none of them has Daytona. There are many people, who want to buy 10.000e watch from AD, rather than second hand market, if the price is the same.
Last time, when I was talking with the biggest AD, they told me, that you have to wait for black dial about 4 months and white maybe a bit less, but they never know, when they will get these.
3-5 years waiting lists are gone, but the reason is also the price and bad economy.

I quess, if You look only that one second hand dealer, You can tell also that Deepsea is not popular, because he has one as well and even more, the new Sub is even less popular, because he has two of those (also one unused). But many people say also, that AD:s have long waiting list for new Sub. BS?

http://www.sepanviisari.fi/miehet.php
(This shop is by the way very good, done many deals with him.)

I find that interesting, that first someone tells, what he has heard from AD, and then others yell: BS. Then someone tells that it is not true, because he has been told by AD "this and that".

Well, at least this tells again, that Daytona is The Watch. You love it or hate it, usually those, who has one, love, and those who dont, hate. I wonder why?
At least I love mine, after about +25 years of having wristwatch mania, Daytona is the most comfortable Rolex, that I have had, and the most accurate.

Anyway, Merry Christmas from Finland:
