Lutefisk: whose idea was this stuff?

With Christmas comes a childhood memory of hiding down in the basement with my cousins trying to escape the smell of boiling lutefisk upstairs. My elderly Swedish relatives always prepared the dried, lye-soaked codfish for the holidays, thankfully giving the kids downstairs Swedish meatballs.

The horrible smell is only trumped by the taste and texture. Lutefisk stinks and looks like white lumpy Jello. Eating it can only be described using allusions to mucous or phlegm. Yet, in northern Minnesota, one can find "lutefisk suppers" hosted by Lutheran churches all season long.

Have any of you ever eaten lutefisk?

Never liked it and don't eat it.

It's actually not a big thing in Sweden but in Norway they go crazy over it.

It is an old viking tradition, it was a way to preserve fish for trips as salt was hard to come by in those days up in northern Europe. But I agree, not a very pleasant taste or smell. Yet, it smells way better than fermented herring http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surstr%C3%B6mming

Hideous stuff. I spend a lot of time in Norway and they love it. That and a dish called kumla which is basically boiled fatty meats.

My mother's family is Norwegian and my dad's in Scottish, so I've tried each. Gotta say Haggis is waaayyyy better. I like it, even knowing what it is. Although I miss my uncle very much, the family Christmas tradition of a Lutefisk dinner, thankfully, passed with him.

I'm also from Minnesota: it was served at my family's Christmas every year until my grandparents past. I may have tried it was I was real young, but never when I was able to hold a memeory to it. The smell in the house was just terrible. Half the family would devour the Lutefisk, while the other half had steak or crab. We we're quite divided. Enjoy!!

There is a transition time between fishing until freeze-up and permanent cold. The lutefisk also remained preserved in any season.
