Hi,

I'm new to the forum and have a question concerning Daytonas.

I've seen 116520s which retailed at an AD for $6000-$7900 depending upon when you bought the timepiece, listed for sale pre-owned for $10,850-$12,900.

I've also seen:
16519s list $21,400 new, pre-owned $13,500-$15,000.
116519 list $19,500 new, pre-owned $13,000
116523 list $11,275 new, pre-owned $7300

The question is: Why, other than supply and demand, is a 116520 worth so much more pre-owned than new from an AD?

Will the 116520 continue to hold it's pre-owned value in the future?

And does anyone know if production of this model is increasing or remaining the same?

PS: Is there another Rolex timepiece, other than the 116520, the Milgauss, or the 16610LV, in current production that would maintain a higher pre-owned value than new from an AD?

Hi John,

There is no alternative answer to your first question other than "supply and demand". There is no need for additional criteria to create inflated secondary market prices.

As long as the demand exceeds supply the inflated prices will continue. Should Rolex ramp up production then the prices will fall flat. Same story with the Milgauss.

As to the third question my crystal ball is on the blink.

First, welcome to TRF. The Daytona is probably one of the most asked about watches on this forum IMO. Retail for this watch is $7900 but in order to get them for that price, most have to be in good relations with the AD(ie spent a lot of money there). So instead of waiting for up to 3-4 years on a Daytona to come in, people spend premium prices to get the watch now.

Rolex has always limited the production of Daytonas especially the SS with white dial. It seems to be the most difficult to get but they are out there, for those that are searching.

IMO, the Daytona will hold their value and continue to appreciate in value. I also believe Rolex will continue to limit the production of these sought after watches. Most consider this watch the "Holy Grail" of watches.

I have read that the Green Dial 116718 is a "limited" 50-year commemorative model, yet I'm seeing these discounted.

So I'm assuming this model is not a true "limited anniversary" model but a new model such as the 16610LV, which is an anniversary but is not limited.

Any input?

The green dial version is supposedly limited edition but there are as many green dials as black dial on the market. IMO the green colour used is a bit "off", not exactly the Rolex green.

It has been rumoured that the green from any ceramic GMT will be discontinued in the next year or two but who's to believe that?
