you can also try this for aluminum inserts:

put the insert in your freezer for an hour or so, the cold will cause it to contract, then quickly install it. Same approach is used for contact type bearings.

I should clear up that the bottle neck method is only good when the pearl is intact on the insert giving it support in that area. Even then being gentle is crucial.
