USPS Registered Mail - Aarggh!

I sent a watch to a buyer in California Jan. 9. The clerk said sending Registered Mail is the best option for a valuable item. Item is insured and secure; everyone who handles the package must sign for it along the way. She says the item should arrive by Jan. 11. Sounds great, so I do it.

Fast forward to the present. Make that "slow forward." Buyer has not received the watch. The post office keeps saying not to worry, that Registered Mail is slow but secure. I ask them why they advise customers that RM only takes a couple of days (even the website lists the expected delivery as "Jan. 11") when it has now been more than a week and the watch has still not been delivered? I just get a shrug.

The buyer is rightfully concerned. I'm having a ring-tailed fit. Any words of advice or comfort?

I imagine it will; it's just nuts that the post office would tell a customer "two days" when that's not going to happen. That sets up the expectation that the item will arrive in two days, you know? Bad post office PR.

I feel bad for the buyer, who has been patiently waiting.

It's always at least a week cross country but it will get there safe and sound.

I think the last thing I sent registered took a week and a half to go a quarter of the way across the country. It would have been quicker for me to drive it there myself. It will get there.........eventually. I wouldn't trust anything the post office says, nor would I believe their website. Their tracking system is so far behind UPS/FedEx, it blows my mind.

I couldn't agree more. I cringe when someone sends me something other than a bill by USPS. At least you can claim an insurance loss if it doesn't get there, Lisa. That's small consolation, I know.

Hi Lisa. I've used that service myself several times and find that it is usually a minimum of seven days. The good news is that I have never had them lose a registered insured package.

Good luck.

It's the most safe action our government is capable of. The teller was misinformed as to transit time.

It'll be fine. Registered can take a bit extra. Did you send it priority? ... if you did priority / registered it should take two to three days though the post has been all over the place lately ... Anyway, no worries, it will get there.

When I sent a watch to RSC in NY I thought registered was registered and that was it, but it turns out it is a service on top of priority for example. FL to NY took 3 days.

This is why I don't use USPS anymore, and it sounds like many others don't. I've had too many similar issues with them. Their tracking system sucks and their guarantees are for shit. FedEx with third party insurance is the way to go for watches. Amazing tracking system, and never had a problem.

The good news for you is that it *should* get there safe and sound, as this delay is normal for government service.

Whoever said two days was dead wrong.

I have received watches registered mail within NY state (one end to the other) and it took a week or more. The good news is I have never heard of a watch being lost that was shipped registered mail and I doubt yours will be the first. Sit tight and reassure the recipient it will arrive safe and sound.

It hasn't been my experience. The only time I used registered (on top of priority, using box and label received from Rolex up there) it took 3 days FL to NY as I mentioned above.

Well, then I guess I am the exception. I purchased a watch (70s-era Seiko) for a couple hundred bucks last month, December 9th to be exact. USPS Registered- insured blah blah blah, was chosen by the seller. He is in NY. Tracking showed it never left the support facility in Virginia, it "Disappeared" Luckily, the seller was stellar, he refunded my money, was able to claim the insurance so nobody lost... But the USPS Tellers we both dealt with were incompetent to say the least. Lisa, I hope your shipment makes it soon, but I learned my lesson.

Lisa, I think the system is seriously constipated right now. Just as an example I sent a Priority Mail pkg on Jan. 10 that is still in transit...and it went from the Midwest to Mass. to NY to Mass. and its destination is OREGON. Oh, and it still shows an estimated delivery date of Jan. 12.

Grr.

I bet yours will arrive safe and sound, soon.

The USPS website is misinforming customers as well. I look up the Registered Mail ID on my parcel online and it still says "Expected delivery Jan. 11."

It'll get here...

Its like British Rail, "it maybe late - but it gets ya there"

Its frustrating too as I have been there done that - but it will 'eventually' get there...

The chain of handoffs with signatures is secure, and the pkg is stored in a caged area, fyi...

I know, I know, its the 'humans' we have to worry about, the scheming bastids that we are can always figure out some way to finagle !

Very unlikely that it is lost. But it has happened in the past unfortunately. The less time in transit and less chance things can go wrong thats why i ship overnight

Lucky you Paul !

Here in Belgium I don't dare to send something with the Post . . . it's always a 50 % chance that it will be lost . . .

UPS / DHL / Fedex / TNT / GLS whatever . . .

If I understand correctly, when the value is greater than $5000, your only insured options are: USPS registered, and outside insurance like parcel Pro. LOADS of people on here use parcel Pro, and according to the responses in the past, none have ever had to make a claim. At least, none have come forward when the topic has been brought up.

Not sure which I would use if shipping over $5k in watches. One is very slow but secure, the other is fast using FedEx but no experience of claims against Parcel Pro from anyone here.

Hang in there, I'm sure it will get there.

Definitely not the norm according to my own experience.

Well, I AM upset. But what can you do? I'm up against a huge government organization and they don't want to help.

At any rate, I just now checked my Registered Mail ID number on their website and FINALLY there is some updated information - It looks like it should be in the buyer's town now:

"Your Item's Status Your item arrived at 7:07 am on January 15, 2013 in SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA 93401. The Postal Service expects to deliver the item on Wednesday, January 9, 2013. Information, if available, is updated periodically throughout the day. Please check again later."

I like that - "Postal Service expect to deliver the item January 9..." Wow, they must be time travelers.
