ROLEX now

Hello friends,
I don't know about anybody else, but ROLEX seems to be producing some really tacky watches these days. The "Datejust II" with tiger stripes and gems. The "GMT Master II" with gems instead of a regular bezel. I have a 1957 Air King, which I love because of it's simplicity. I recently purchased an ORIENT "Chicane" that has in house 21 Jewel automatic movement, the band is garbage (folded link), but it looks beautiful, similar to the Explorer I. I highly recommend it. I replaced it with the "James Bond" 20 mm NATO band and it looks great. As far as

You might want to check a few doors down, I think there is a swatch forum somewhere. My GMT Master II has a damn fine bezel. Not a big gem fan, but we around here tend to espouse the positives of Rolex references, or at least I do. Welcome aboard.

Rolex does manufacture some outliers for a particularly market segment; the Rainbow Daytona and jeweled encrusted GMT II. However, it is an extremely small market segment.

Yes, the Orient is a decent $100 watch. I had a customer gift one to me. One issue with the design of the movement is you cannot manually wind it to fully wind, as only the automatic system winds. If I were to spend $100 on a watch, I would go with a Seiko 5 or Casio.

I don't like diamond or jewel encrusted anything but the DJ SANR with the rubber strap is sublime.

Some folks like those "tacky" watches and I don't think Rolex would be producing them if there wasn't a market for it.

They produce a wide range of pieces to appeal to a number of different tastes.

I agree. It's a small market.

To the OP...I like that Rolex offers those eclectic selections. It's a nice contrast to the simple, conservative designs found on most of the their models. IMHO.

Before I brought a Rolex I actually looked at Orient really hard. Nice watch. Welcome, and as others noted, those watches, just like the blacked out ones are for market. If I were a King or Prince and had money pouring out my arse, sure I'd have a baby tiger, tiger striped Aston Martin, tiger print diamond encrusted shoes, and an iced out Tiger Styled Rolex. My name on TRF would be "Rarwl!" (That's the sound of a tiger roaring spelled out).

Rolex makes a watch for everyone. From the AK to the YM2. I don't love everything they make but same holds true with Omega too.
