Ebay feedback question

Does anyone know what it means when you are looking at a sellers feedback and it says "PRIVATE" in the date/time column? How can a sale be private if it's on Ebay, a public auction site? The "private" tag hides the item sold and its' price. How are you supposed to get an idea of the sellers profile if pertinent information is concealed?

According to Ebay, if your status is private you are no allowed to sell a item. You can buy a item with private status just not sell. From my understanding...

...I have purchased items from SELLERS whose history are "private".

...what was happening 5 or so years ago, was that sometimes BUYERS were contacted direct from/thru their user id by folks like US here on TRF to inform them they were buying or had bought a counterfeit or misrepresented item.

...ebay strengthened the seller position by removing that completely.

...anyway, this was a way for SELLERS to HIDE potential buyer contact info so they could NOT be contacted.

...eBay really has a "hollow" buyer AND seller protection program.

...albeit, I buy quite a few things and sell a few things thru their venue. I just try to be extra careful doing both.

...don't know if this helps for a better understanding, but hope it does.

...CURRENTLY, it does NOT benefit a seller at all and is really useless.

If you make your Feedback Profile private, your Feedback comments will be hidden from other users.

I do avoid sellers with a great deal of private feedback.

eBay even advises people that this may decrease the chance that other members will want to do business with you.
