Having my first child this year, considering another purchase/gift
Im having my first child this year, a baby girl, and with that, I have always loved the idea of purchasing a watch with the idea of giving it to her as a 18th or 21st birthday present. I've always had a thing for rose gold, and I figure this would be an excellent time. Of course Ive wanted a DeepSea also, just not sure if in 18 years, the ladies trend will still be large watches. I plan to wear the watch on occasion until I give it to her, being that it will have great meaning to me.
Anybody have any opinions? Right now I am really liking the stainless/rose DateJust with slate dial, and of course the DeepSea. Would compliment my rotation of an 82 GMT Master on NATO strap (my birth year); an 08 Milgauss GV (wife bought it for me for supporting her through Pharmacy school; and a Tag Heuer golf watch. |

Congrats first of all! How exciting! I think a DJ is a wonderful idea! So many variations to consider. The SS/RG is a lovely combo!

A member here was discussing this 31mm datejust a few days ago and I think this is a beautiful combination.
However, at 31mm may be small for you... but I think it would be very appropriate gift for a girl. Perhaps a bit too formal when she will be 18 but surely spot on down the road of her life! |

I have done the birth year watch thing for my daughter as well |

You asked for opinions so hope you can take this one. IMHO, it is your wife who you'd buy the watch for And she would hand it down. Quote:
Or whatever your wife would like to wear for 18 years!

Now, re recommendations I 2nd the PP post. Buy something for your wife and have her hand it down. That way you can still get your DS. Win, win. |

How about...buying your wife a watch for the birth of your daughter. That way, your wife can always cherish the watch for that reason, and your wife can pass her watch (which was a birth gift from you) down to your daughter. Your wife will appreciate it, and the watch will mean more to your daughter because she will have grown up seeing it on her mom's wrist, knowing it was a gift of love from you to celebrate her birth.

I'm in the same boat. Just bought my 1 year old a Daytona SS and will be giving it to him when he gets his first real job. I'll enjoy it for the me next 20 years, wear in my battles (aka work)

Just got back from the most local AD (2hours away) here's what I found today. The deep sea is out. It's too big for a girl to wear I think. As much as I loved it, think I've ruled that out. Found a everose/ss black dial oyster bracelet that I liked, and looked in the corner and seen a ss white dial Daytona. Tried it on and loved it. I think this is going to be the one unless I change my mind.
To address some suggestions that I buy my wife a watch to hand down, I have 2 thoughts... 1. I just bought my wife another watch about 5 months ago, she said she doesn't want another, and thinks if I don't go with too large a watch it would be special (reason #2) given the father/daughter relationship and how they are usually very strong, if it came from me. As long as I get something a woman could realistically wear. |

Congratulations on your new arrival! Can't go wrong with stainless/18k rose gold. I'm sure whatever you choose she'll cherish it for years to come after you hand it down to her.

A TT DJ with yellow or rose would be great choices. Congrats on the new baby!

Thanks everyone for the congrats and well wishes. I went ahead and made my purchase today. Went with the ss white Daytona. Loved the watch as soon as I put it on, only debate today became the ss or tt with ivory dial. I loved the way the watch wears. And it looks impressive on women also. Got a pretty good deal on it as I have seen used watches on this forum listed for more money. Had it shipped out of state to my brother in SD to save on tax.
Right now I am working on what I should engrave on the case back. Wife wanted something she had read somewhere like "love you to the moon and back" I thought I might go with something a little simpler like "love always" if you guys have any ideas I would love to hear them. Matt |

It would be even greater if you arrange it so that the warranty stamped date is the date of birth of your baby.
This is one of my regrets that I'm trying to correct .. with no luck until now. Gobratulations by the way |
